One for the grandson

Hi Guys,

Very new to this forum. Hello Everyone!

My dad and I are thinking of getting our very first Rolex. I've spent 6 months reading and researching and finally set on getting a SS GMT2c. I'm 25.

Dad is 55 and doesn't know much about watches. His only brief to me is that wants me to find him "something i can pass to my grandson".

Of course I'm not married and so he doesn't have any grandchildren yet, but I think it's a hint for me.

In any case, I really dont know what to recommend him. He has a normal size wrist and would consider YG. Preferably not too sporty as he has been wearing a sporty watch for the past 15 years and I am getting the GMT. (I'm secretly thinking that if he gets a dressy watch, I could borrow it on certain occasions).

The one time I took him into the local AD, I showed him the Daytona and he didn't like it. We then looked at the DJ II in YG. He liked it but didn't love it and from reading on the this forum, it doesn't appear to be something of a classic (obviously because its new) and something you could pass down.

Any suggestions of one for my future son would be grateful!

Welcome to TRF. It sounds like you just need to go back to the AD and just let him pick whatever he likes. It does not matter what he passes down. I am sure that whatever it is, it would be appreciated for what it is - granddads watch

My thoughts, for what they're worth...You can't go wrong with a Submariner..
Your Dad is only 55 so it's definietly appropriate..
The other option would be a classic DJ...a bit more of a dress watch. Something that your son could pull out for those special occasions if he's not comfortable wearing a rolex everyday...

Agree w milguass but sporty. SS daytona would be the obvious choice but if he doesnt like them thats out. I would stick to ss maybe tt in the end cant go wrong w any model.

If he likes yellow gold, then a DD in 36mm is probably the way to go. Could also consider the YG Yachtmaster in 35mm (the 40mm is a bit sporty, and a bit too much gold, IMO). Has he considered a SS/WG Turn-O-Graph?

A very nice post indeed! Always fun to read these and get involved.. I'm not sure what your fathers budget is but if he is into yellow gold then a Day-Date might be a beautiful option!

It's iconic (IMHO), dressy but you could easily pull it off in a pair of jeans too. I think that's the beauty of most of Rolex's pieces. They all can be worn on multiple occasions if not all the time. And if your dad golfs then it's the perfect watch for a day in the fairways..

If that's a bit much (cost wise) then I'm sure there's something in the DJ line that will catch his eye! So many options there it's hard not to find something you like!

if not, tt dj perhaps with a jubilee? the oyster bracelet gives it a sportier look, whilst remaining refined and timeless if you are looking for that...

The Milgaus(s) GV can be whatever it wants to be. Sports or Dress.

You won't see a lot of them around the traps.

It's easy to read and the dial has a perfect symmetry that is missing on some Rolex models.

Any Rolex SS sports/ tool watch will give you your money's worth. Some off the wall, low production watches such as the Milgauss can potentially give you some great appreciation as well. Steer away from DJ, Air King, even DD. My Dad's 40 year old 18K YG DD was sold recently for $4800 ( almost double the price he paid for it ), but his Double Red SD was sold a few years ago to a collector oversea for $25K ( don't know the exact cost but it was a fraction of the 18K 1803 DD )

I will need to take him to the AD again and check out some of the pieces suggested in this thread. Hopefully he can find something that HE likes.

I think he liked the idea of the 18K YG DD II as it would be passing down precious metal. However I will certainly let him know that they seem also to depreciate the most

I would stay away from anything under 40mm as DJ,DD,AK, the 36mm is already becoming advertised a ladies size watch, I would also recomend that you buy something from the latest updated versions as:

GMTIIC, SS, TT,YG
SUBMARINER, SS, TT,YG (I would wait for the updated SS version)
MILGAUSS (Preferably GV)


This way you have secured that hopefully the model will be unchanged when he gets it, as I suppose it will take a minimum of maybe 18 years untill he will receive it...
