A Poll for those that have sold their first nice watch they bought.

I'm considering diversifying my collection.

I often hear that people regret the selling of their first for sentimental reasons. Please let me know your thoughts either way. I have a couple watches in mind that I'm fairly certain I'll never flip and will be good additions to my collection.

I sold my first to fund my second. I did not loose any sleep over it as the sentimental value transfered from the 1st to the 2nd.

Mik, which are you considering parting with?

My first was a DJ that I sold after a couple of years to upgrade to the newer style DJ and I never looked back! Everyone is different though....my advice is to take your time deciding. A good 'test' is to take the watch or watches you're considering parting with and put them away for a while...see if you miss wearing them.

My first is my sub. Actually the watches are in order from left to right in terms of purchase order.

Great minds think alike. I've put the sub away for a couple weeks already.

My first was given to me by my brother, so no I will never sell it.

If we are talking about the first nice watch that I bought, then that was flipped many times over.

Unfortunately I did the same thing with the second one, and I'm regretting that one even more... so I feel I've learned my lesson by now!

Sold my first (a T series GMT Master pepsi) and I have gotten to the point where I really wish I hadn't. Tread carefully and make sure you're okay with parting with your Sub.

My 1675 that I bought new is still with me and always will be. The history I've built with that watch is more than the sum of it's parts. Through good times and bad it was always there and fostered my love for the brand.

That said, I suppose it depends on how long you've had the watch, how much it's worn, and what have the two of you "seen".

At the end of the day though there is only one "first".

Right. It has seen some stuff already. Like you said, there is only one "first".

My first "nice" watch - ie >$1500 was an Omega Seamaster midsize. Big mistake. Should have gotten the full size...

Mission accomplished ... But now I am in love with Rolex!

As a result of poor research and no knowing about TRF, I ended up selling my first nice watch!!!

Another way to look at it is this:

It's your first Sub.

And possibly:

Also your first Seiko.

Also your first Panarai base.

Also your first Cartier.

Also your first PAM Luminor Marina.

Also your first GMT IIC.


Unless it's been through something sentimental with you, or has sentimental value because of how it was acquired, don't worry about it. You can always replace it if you want another Sub.

I regret flipping my ND Sub, but not because it was special. I regret it because I have not found anything I like better. Simple solution...I'm buying another one.

Unless your first watch was bought to signify or celebrate a momentous event, I don't see it as such a big deal if you sell it. I sold the first one I bought because my personal tastes changed over time, and I didn't feel like the watch really sang to me any more like it used to. I think if you let something go for the right reason, then you won't end up regretting it.

My first watch was a Bvlgari Ergon and I'll never sell it because it's a great daily beater and there's nothing else out there that looks like it. It has taken years of abuse and barely has any wear on it. The fit is perfect as well, wraps around the wrist very naturally.

Personally I wouldn't, but then I'm not a flipper. You have a very nice collection at the moment. Does it really have to be the Sub? Either way you can always purchase another Sub Date further down the track if you feel you miss it. Tough decision, good luck with it

I have owned my first Rolex 3 times. I bought it, sold it to a fellow. Bought it back 3 years later. Sold it to another fellow. Bought it back 2 years later. Sold it again. Still gone at this time, but you never know......I have never regretted selling it, but then again it was just a SS Airking. Pretty replaceable. I have regretted selling MANY other things in my life.
