Another new guy

Thought I’d introduce myself. Obviously new to this forum but not to the ‘Texas Timex’ world (grin). Was one of the first members of TURF but dropped out after it came into new ownership. But this itch never really goes away. I won’t bore you with all the things that happened since then but just want to contribute again to this forum.

I work as an IT Coordinator for a branch of a Dutch multinational oil and chemical storage company. My main interest, besides Rolex and other mechanical watches, is vintage US flight jackets and related articles. But I collect replica’s, not originals. I’m 45 now, and have a wife and daughter.

My 16610 (one of the first with SEL) was stolen about 2 months ago, along with a number of other watches. I’m now in the marked for a new watch but I’m still spinning over the prices. But we all know this, and there’s nothing to do about it.

Now the blasphemy: I really do like the new Omega Super Ocean a lot. Chronometer too and a nice depth rating. Reminds one of the earlier Subs. But I think it will become either a SS Sub or a SD.

That’s it for now, hope I didn’t bore you already,

Frans.

Welcome to TRF, Frans. It's good to have you here. Sorry about the loss of your watch(s). Hopefully you had them insured, so maybe you'll get something out of this.

As for the Omegas, you'll be sorry you admitted to that. As soon as JJ sees this thread, he's going to be all over you to sell you on the beauty of the Omega Planet Ocean (which we affectionately call the Pumpkin).

Hi Frans,

Firstly, a warm and BIG welcome to this great forum. You'll love it here.
Secondly, sorry to hear about the loss of your Rolex. That is indeed a bummer. I think I'd just wither away and die if my YM got pinched...
And, thirdly the Planet Ocean is one helluva watch. You have a choice of the pumpkin (orange bezel) which I have or the all black bezel and dial which is also very good looking. Here's a pic of mine....and don't listen to these other tossers...they are just jealous!!

It IS a very nice watch with only one (major) drawback: it isn't a Rolex!

Take care,

Frans.

P.S. And thanks all you guys for the warm welcome!

Hello Frans and welcome to our ultra friendly forum. I hope you will post a lot and make this place one of the top watch forums on the net.

It's a real bummer to hear you had your watches stolen. Things like that put me off making up a collection.

Not to worry

I will get a new watch. But the punk(s) really made a killing. And in The Netherlands insurance policies are very complicated and discriminating. As we live in a big city AND in a so-called ‘high risk area’ (this is deducted from statistical analysis on the postal code), the premiums are very high. And thus our jewelry wasn’t fully covered. Passports gone, VCR, Pay-TV decoder, the works. And the police were very slow to react, it took a detective 3 hours to get to our flat. And the station is 700 meters from my doorstep, FGS! Never mind, it were only inanimate objects and maybe I’ll get into this story later.

And now for 64,000 dollar question: what to buy? SS Sub? SD? A Breitling? An Omega PO? (Yes, bring it on, I can take it :-) Is the movement of the PO a manufacture? Must be, because of the co-axial attribute.

Take care, nice to be back,

Fran.

Welcome to OUR forum !

Next to a Rolex, I would have you consider a Panerai PAM 187.

Well, the PAM is huge. I’m afraid it would make me look like I’m wearing an alarm clock on my wrist. Second, it is expensive, at least to me. (Just an ordinary dad). And last but not least (gulp), I think Panerai are milking the concept. It started out as a re-issue of a 40’s Italian dive watch. And now look what they offer. This is something I don’t like, although business wise it must be profitable.

Take care,

Frans.

Agreed 100%, Frans. Stick with your original choices - a Sub-date or an SD.

Good luck - JJ
