Embarrassing Questions First PAM

Cant seem to read enough or climb the learning curve quickly. I adore the 111, but recently at paneristi dot com sniffed around just enough to confuse myself. Is the 111 an "automatic movement"? I also am now looking at the GMT, ( same question), seems a bit more interesting to me. Ive been a Rolex guy for 25 years, and feel it may be time to expand the collection into PAM. I do not ever sell them I am a user and hoarder, but like significant unique watches. Essentially, I need an automatic movement as I use a winder, and want to purchase a PAM as I like them and the new to me exclusivity.

DNA would favor the 111, but the GMT varient would also make a great first Panerai.

I went up the learning curve like yourself recently and along with the advice from the good people in this part of TRF I found the easiest way to understand/navigate the multitude of PAMs was to get an AD to send me a copy of the catalogue so that I could quickly flick between the various types. It seems a bit nerdy but worked for me!

I have been impressed by the quality of the design and workmanship that seems to come from a relatively small batch producer that Panerai has remained. Whatever you end up deciding on I feel a PAM is a great balance to a Rolex or two.

Was hooked on the 111, but wanted automatic so I gather I will choose the GMT, which is ironic, as my least favorite Rolex in my collection is the SS Daytona. Go Figure, now to find a LNIB! Specifically, what number is the one pictured above by Mike?

I adore the 111 myself.Its a manual wind.56h powerreserve.I wouldnt let the fact that its not an auto detract me from this model.

Remember with Panerai,the simpler the design,the more interesting it is.

Panerai offer watches under 3 main group
1. Historic
2. Contemporary
3. Manifattura (In-house)

GMT is only available from 2nd & 3rd group.

PAM111 is from 1st group where all watches are manual winded. The most expensive, rarest & most sought after PAMs are from this 1st group.

My GMT shown below here using my beloved iPhone 3Gs, for example, are from 3rd group that uses in-house Manifattura movements.











I was a Rolex guy...now it's nothing else but Panerai for real military usage history association, design & technology reason.

Thank you! I have been to too many sites to recall, and I have finally found the answer! I now get it! Think I'm going to get the 88. Found one here on the forum. BTW that iPhone shoots great pictures.

My Panerai preference is for the manual-wind 6497. Something familiar about that movement; it requires daily attention, and will continue to return the same. I like the destro models, specifically the 219; to me, it is a very unique piece, even among others Panerai models.

I really enjoy watching as I wind the watch, as shown through the sapphire back-plate; the interaction of gears/springs/plates/bridges really speaks to my soul. Hokey? Perhaps, but I'm not gifted with an extensive enough vocabulary to eloquently describe the sensations experienced with a hand-wind time-piece.

I just know that I really like it!

Not trying to hijack the thread, but could someone point me to a site that will help me with this same problem. I went to an AD yesterday and could not make heads or tails. They all looked the same to me! But my wife says that adout my GMT II, IIc and Sub so I guess it is all in the details.

I guess I was lucky. I bought my Panerai from the big AD down in the Caymans. They gave me the catalogue (Panerai Laboratorio di idee 2008) and anything else I wanted related to OP watches, including a good price.

I got the PAM005. That's a historic very similar to the 111 except the movement is the OPII not the OPXI and it has the Logo OP not the name. Also a Handwound mechanical movement. Interstingly, though, the OPII is listed as COSC and the OPXI is not listed as COSC. Does anyone know differently?

Which model is the bang for the buck? If I want one to wear and begin my education, which one should I look for that would get me in at the lowest pricepoint. Kind of like a beater DJ, one that has taken the biggest hit depreciation wise but is by no means a bad peice.

Nevermind on the COSC. Further on in the Movement section it covers the XI as COSC. I think all but the OPI is COSC according to the book.

Also a PAM newbie here... Been wearing Roleys for years and man PAMs are hard to figure out in terms of models.

What should I be looking for if my goal is a used automatic with sandwich dial and exhibition back? Thanks!

Welcome to TRF and the world of PAMs! I struggled for a while but a hard copy catalogue helped me as I could flick between the pages and compare the various watches.

I think Panerai newbies should start with one of models like the zero, 005, 111, and 112. Those will give you a good feel for the watch size on your wrist and come at accessible price points. Resale is generally pretty decent though best would be to pick up preowned. That way you should lose even less when you inevitably flip into / upgrade to 312, 232, 233, 190, 249, or whatever floats your boat.
