New tv

My son bought a new tv. Seems he wasn't happy with the Sharp Aquos LC-32GA5U and bought a Sony KDL-46XBR2.

The new one will deliver 1080p resolution if you have any such source material. There is nothing over the cable greater than 1080i and I am told that no one is broadcasting or producing material in 1080p except for some HD or Blu-Ray DVD's.

He also bought a Denon DVD 757 which is supposed to upconvert conventional DVD's, but I heard that the tv will do this as well from 780p sources.

Frankly I don't know much about this stuff. I still watch a 27" CRT but I have come to like color over B&W.

Any opinions on this Sony?

Its bigger than his Sharp Aquos.

Tell him to try this, watch a dvd in the dark. During darker scenes (movie credits for example) ask him if he noticed places that are supposed to be dark lits up with white puffy patches, if that doesn't bother him, its a great tv.

the Sony is a good one, but so is the Sharp (sharp used to be junk, but they are leading edge tech on lcd)

i have the sharp in the bedroom and a pioneer pro elite in the living room

i will probably get a sony next, for the bedroom, the 40 inch, due to size

the 1080p deal is simple, only info that is that high def is Blu Ray or HD DVD... usually, on a screen under 50 inches you will not see the advantage of 1080p over 720p (1080I is same as 720 p more or less)...

but, if you are buying and can afford the 1080p then you get that as that is state of the art

getting hd channels is the next big step!

if it is a 40 inch the model is KDL-40XBR2

this tv is also known to have clouding issues, so if I were spending that amount of money I might get another model

It's the 46" model. He was all hot to buy it, He did some research but came up with this on his own. I will check out the clouding issues and the white patches. I haven't even seen it on yet, he just got it. He's 26 and doesn't listen to me much anymore.

I'm kinda with you, Bob. I've got a 20" CRT in the bedroom and a 32" CRT in the family room. Two reasons I haven't gone HD or flat yet. 1) They don't enhance the quality of the programming, which on a good day is pretty sh!tt# and on most days it's just downright awful. And 2) I don't have room for a big sreen job. I've got too much artwork on the walls to find space for a boob toob.

So I'll stick with what I've got to watch the 11:00 PM news.

if you have access to HD programming, then you really must check that out, once you have seen your favorite show or football game in HD you cant go back

I did watch some football games in HD on Xmas Day. I agree the quality of the picture is excellent. But I am not much of a sports fan (I do watch Wizards games on TV when we're not at the games, but that's not enough to justify the cost). And as I said, the quality of the picture doesn't increase the quality of the programming. And I just don't have the room for a big screen TV.

So call me a luddite.

Well no matter what brand of LCD TV you buy today in the UK or most of the world. The screen panel will have been made by either LG-Philip's, Samsung or Sony, unless of Chinese origin.LG-Philip's is currently the world's second largest LCD screen maker, top is Samsung Electronics of Korea. While Hitachi, Panasonic and Pioneer are the main suppliers of Plasma screens to various manufactures.Sony has pulled out of plasma manufacturing and has chosen to concentrate on producing bigger LCD screens of better quality.IMHO at the moment Samsung screens are just a small fraction ahead at the moment. But LG-Philips and Sony are catching up fast.Agree Sharp is a fine brand and specialise in design Microelectronics and supply the circuit boards etc to other manufacturers,as well as building there own electrical products. But for now my Phillips 28" CRT will do for me,fantastic picture and proper surround sound.

My 'rents just got a 1080p Mitsubishi DLP 65" television. We watched some of the college football bowl games on it. My gosh the thing is a monster, and the picture quality was fantastic.

The picture looks great! However, unless you have access to a HD or Blu-ray DVD you can't see true 1080p, so I am told, despite the "upscaling" features of some tv's and DVD players.

I see a list of upcoming Blu-ray DVD's among which is "Rocky" (1976). How do they do this? How do they get that resolution from a 30 year old film? Does film contain that much "information?"

I just read that there is plenty of "data" on analog film to transfer well to HD and even up to 1080p resolution. I am quite impressed with the 1080i and at least we will be ready for 1080p if Charter.com expectorates it in the future.

But, remember this is my son's trip. I just tag along. I would probably buy a Rolex instead of an HDTV. Hey I guess I already did that a couple of times!

Yep, there is!

My guess is when make the new, HD, super duper versions of existing films, they would pull out the actual film master roll, and re-scan that.
Then, they just re-encode to DVD at HD resolution... simple!

The scanning process for motion picture film is known as 'telecine'. It's basically a big scanner, that works line by line, incredibly fast. But, it all depends on what machine you use (sony vialta, davinci etc etc). The lower-end standard nowadays for a telecine machine is '2K'.... which basically means that it can scan the frame of the film at 2000x2000 pixels. But hell, technology being technology they're up to 4K and above nowadays..
