what is a maxi dial?
what exact is the maxi dial and how is it different from a non-maxi dial?

The maxi dial is where the hour markers are larger in size or "maxed" out compared to the regular dial. The best way to see is compare the old Subs to the new ceramic subs. You can definitely see the difference. The markers are more pronounced on the maxis

Modern Maxi dials have larger indices and minute hand. A good comparison is a 16610 Sub vs a 16610 LV
  Vintage Maxi dials are usually seen on the 5513s of which I don't have a pic. Hope this helps.

You are talking about a Rolex submariner which had several dials that may look the same however they are different. Rolex made changes to the dials and a collector can tell the years of the watch by looking at the dials.
Collectors have several names for dials. I only have a few photos of some watches however you can see the difference. |

Yes, the vintage maxis are painted on tritium markers as opposed to the current applied Superluminova with WG surrounds. Many can argue that the Maxi Dial is a tribute to classic Rolex design.

the maxi is the green bezel LV.... see the difference there, quite obvious between the two.
