Excellent, kinda Tex/ Mex.
Karis, that's the 9 oz fillet. The guys on the elevated table were working on the 72 oz challenge. dP

I've spent a fair amount in time in Amarillo myself and everytime we've got a newbie with us we have to make the trek to the Big Texan. I've probable been nine or ten times and still haven't seen anybody make it through the full challenge. It's quite the chore - a shrimp cocktail, salad, the 72 oz steak, and a potato. Finish and its free, don't and it costs a couple of million bucks! Did you get the "cowboy minstrels" to come by your table? Being from Tennessee, we usually tip them to play Rocky Top. Not sure if they know My Old Kentucky Home but they can damn sure play Yellow Rose of Texas. Try to make it down to Palo Duro if you can, it's a beautiful canyon.

72oz. of beef plus the fixin's and it's free, if you can eat it.
I went through Amarillo no less than twenty times last year and many more times through the years and never once have I had a hankerin' to go there to eat. I always do stop at the China Star in Amarillo on my way east and at the China Star in Wichita Falls on my way back west. Both are fine buffets. |

I lived in Amarillo for 5 years and never saw anybody finish it. I once also almost ran over the cowboy and his horse that hangs out on I-40 trying to rustle up business for The Big Texan.
Get a chicken fried steak before you leave town. There were several good places to eat on old Rt 66 but I can't remember any of them. I moved away 15 years ago, Amarillo is too cold and windy in the winter for me. A 9 hour drive south solved that problem. And yes, a trip to Palo Duro is worth it if you have the time. http://www.palodurocanyon.com/

I had two friends who actually finished the challenge and I was there to witness it. They are both huge eaters. Both were linemen in college for Texas. I cannot imagine putting away that much food.

Is that the place in Amarillo that was featured on Man vs. Food? There are signs for that place on I-40 stretching all the way through Arkansas.
