wifey's iPad is ready for collection - having 2nd thoughts..
after about 3 weeks waiting....
BUT our main concern is with the 1st generation bug/early adaptor issues. as much as we think it will be cool and handy to have the iPad now (also "an upgrade" to our ipod Touch), should we sit for abit longer and wait for the 2nd generation? the iPad in question is a 32G Wi-Fi + 3G. i have heard/read many great reviews, but something in my head kept on telling me to wait - the wife isnt too bothered as she is still in her honeymoon period with her new Macbook Pro how long do you think the 2nd Gen will be out? End of this year? First quarter of '11? |

surprisingly, none for the iPad i have read/known so far...
i have been pretty unlucky with many devices in the past, so that thought is lingering in my head. maybe im just finding excusesd (useless ones at that) to wait for the 2nd Gen |

No Dave, he means "bugs" that might be in the first edition of the iPad, and "adopter", as in "early adopter" of a first-generation device.

I ordered my daughter's iPad within minutes of being able to submit a pre-order. I guess that makes me an uber early adopter. To be honest, we could not be happier, the machine performs brilliantly. Sure, later versions will have a few more bells and whistles but if you follow that logic and wait, you will always be waiting for the next one.

It's a cool device.
No doubt there will be second generation improvements. The price point of the device is good so if your really want one go for it now. Evidently it has great battery life. It is quite heavy and solid. The screen is really sharp. I'd suggest you go to your local Apple shop and play with one for half an hour and then decide if you need to get it now.

appreciated all of your suggestions / opinions guys
tbh - happy to get it now, as it'd help me with my eye sight... have been using the iPod Touch for the last 3 years (it is great and i love the ability to be able to get online straight away), and it can be abit harsh/put too much stress on the eyes. i'm letting the wife making her decision this time, so she wont feel this is another one of the hand-me-downs in the future... |

I would wait, I'm not an Apple fan at all but I know some stuff from the industry (i work in the computer hardware distribtution industry). They always build obselescence into their machines and the ipad 1st generation already has a space and connections to have a camera built into it. An ipad with a camera would have better longevity I think.

I'm waiting also. I'm a huge fan of the iPod touch (I'm on it right now). Back when they first came out I gave one (1st gen) to the wife. If I remember correctly within 6 months the second generation came out with double the GB and added features for around the same price.

I must admit, although I can see the use of a camera on a phone, I cant really see the advantage of having one on an ipad, IMHO its just too big, a USB port might come in handy though.

I love my ipad and use it everyday for both business and pleasure. I think a forward facing camera for video chatting would be a good addition.

Loving my iPad, still need the laptop to do heavy lifting, but the simple web browsing and apps are brilliant.
As an old school game lover, I can't recommend Civilization Revolution enough, its absolutely addictive. For a first gen product, it really has no issues that I have noticed at all. |

One thing though, with the Camera kit. Every time I see a friend of mine with his digital SLR pulling the camera apart to take the memory stick out in one hand, then attaching the memory stick reader to the iPad, then putting the card in and reading the photos, it reminds me of the 1980s where the tech savvy would pull out their 20 pound portable telephone, connect the battery pack, set up their whip antenna, and place a "mobile" phone call in public while smugly pretending its easy. Its... inelegant.

I'll give you my $0.02. Bought one for my Mom the evening they were available for pre-order. I knew about the fact that it would not run Flash.
1. If you have never used an AAPL product, the user interface is a revelation. It is just so slick. Gorgeous IPS screen and the battery life is really good. 2. If you have anything less than a 3 Mbps internet connection, I would suggest upgrading it. We had a DSL connection and it was maxed at 2.5 Mbps because of ______ (ISP told us that this is just the way it is). At that rate, the iPad was sluggish. Upgraded to 10 Mbps cable internet and the thing blazes along 3. If your router does not support 802.11n, you may have to upgrade it. 4. When the iPad goes to sleep and you then try to wake it up, it sometimes glitches out a bit in terms of picking up your Wi-Fi connection. It was an annoyance but fit's happening way less since we switched routers (last one was really quite old). It suggests to me that your router needs to be current and updated with the latest firmware. 5. It bugs me that I can't surf the internet with 100% freedom on it. My mom loves it, though. You need to understand that you won't be able to load certain content on it unless you're willing to hack into it. |

For the top tier Ipad with 32GB wifi/3G u could get a used MacBook Air which is a better value at 80GB to 120SSD with webcam and portability. The dollar value just isnt in the ipad. Especially if u buy the mouse wireless bluetooth keyboard and arch stand for the ipad the price is above $1000 f0r 32GB max. However, it is a nice toy.

i personally wouldn't get the 3g especially if you have a 3g phone and just do hotspot. i'm waiting for sept to get mine so i can have the multitask feature. that's a deal breaker for me.

To be honest you really don't notice the lack of multi tasking on the iPad, and on my iOS4 3GS I've never found it even remotely handy yet.
