The word "tank"
A while back I sold some old watches on ebay. Nothing real expensive just a collection of old Bulova's, etc that I had collected over the years. In one of the descriptions I used the word Tank to describe an old square Bulova. After a few days I got an email from a guy who said he was a lawyer representing Cartier. He said if I did not modify my listing, they would pursue action against me for using a copy protected word.
I changed the listing and sent him a nice response back. Always wanted the Santos XL and had actually looked at one the week before. Thats what I was selling the other old watches for, to raise funds for a new purchase. Needless to say I don't want a Cartier any longer. His first email to me was over the top for what I was doing. Just some advice, don't use the word tank when describing a watch thats not a Cartier. Does anyone know if there are any other words I need to avoid in the future? |

You should have told him that Cartier has to renew the trademark protection :
On Wednesday, December 26, 1973, a U.S. federal trademark registration was filed for TANK WATCH. This trademark is owned by Cartier, Incorporated, NEW YORK, NY 10022. The USPTO has given the TANK WATCH trademark serial number of 73009463. The current federal status of this trademark filing is EXPIRED. |

Well for one thing I do not know if he was really a lawyer representing Cartier. He just said he was. The way Ebay works, I had to cancel my auction, which already had bids. I had to email the bidders and start again.
It left a bad taste in my mouth for Cartier for sure. Thanks for the information. I may put another old "tank" up for auction just to see if he shows up again. |
