This is Gracie.
This beautiful girl is my step-brother's daughter Gracie. Around Easter this year, her parents noticed that her hands were shaking and she had difficulty holding on to stuff and maintaining balance. Several doctor's appointments later, an MRI was scheduled, which detected couple small tumors in her brain. Earlier this week she had a biopsy (which, in this case, is basically brain surgery). Yesterday, results came in, which confirmed our greatest fears - it is cancer, which has already started spreading (metastasizing). The location of the tumors makes it inoperable, only other option is radiology. There's less than 40% chance that it is successful, furthermore it can cause her to lose sight and/or hearing. It isn't fair. Makes one question all sorts of things. Our family is devastated. I am a first hand witness how positive energy can change things. Maybe it's imagined, maybe not - but at this point we're hanging on to any possibility of hope. Please send some this way, Gracie needs it.

She will be in my prayers my friend, it's so unfair when a young kid become a victim of this.
I really hope there will be a happy end of this. Sorry Greg.

That's rough, especially considering her age. I really hope she ends up finding a way through it.
I knew a young girl in Canada with leukaemia. Doctors had given up, told her she had 18 months "tops". Her parents took her to Italy and all of these other places she wanted to visit. She's now in her twenties, still going strong. There's obviously health issues, but she's living a happy and fulfilling life. She completely defied the odds and every doctor/specialist. Or there simply isn't a "god" to do any explaining. I can't wait till humans evolve past this stuff. (My take, to each their own). |

Oh dear. Greg, I'm very, very sorry to see this. You are absolutely right: life isn't fair. I can only hope that things turn out well, but I fear that they will not. You and your family have my profound sympathy, and best wishes. I'm not superstitious, but if I was I would say a prayer for her. Stay strong.

My heart goes out to Gracie and her parents and all well wishers. Sad and so depressing to see children suffering from cancer.. looks like the only other option is Radiotherapy. By the way what is the histological diagnosis of the tumor?

Thanks everyone - your kind sentiments are needed and greatly appreciated.
I honestly don't know - what's the 'lay-mans' term for that?

This has just pulled me up short...
I was worrying about my 'troubles' and this made me realise I don't really have any. My VERY best wishes to Gracie, your family and to you, Greg.

It's a real heart breaker Greg but alas such is the size of the world that every day there are hundreds if not thousands of children similarly struck.
There is no rhyme nor reason as far as I can see. Please take hope from the fact that this girl should receive the absolute best medical attention possible and will have the highest chance of a complete recovery than any time in history, including just 10 years ago. I truly hope that the treatment is fully successful. There are some wonderful surgeons and consultants out there.

I am lost for words and in tears hearing your news.
we spend our lifes protecting our children from all things unpleasant that life can throw at them. However, there are some things that are out of our control. My thoughts are with you and your family daily and remember children are tougher than we realise.
