Rolex Clock?

May be some of our forum friends in Asia can answer my question.

While I was in Hong Kong, I saw hundreds of jewelry stores which sold brand new Rolex watches. Apparently, those were old and very reputable business establishments but I was NOT sure if they were ADs. However, my question is: are the Rolex clocks outside of those stores real Rolex made? Did Rolex ever make clocks? I have never seen those clocks in front of American Rolex ADs. How about in Australia?

Also, what has happened to the BIG Rolex sign which was the icon of Hong Kong Harbor; it wasn't there anymore!!

But you don't know who made that clock, do you?

With all these jewelry stores in the world which are Rolex ADs, I would guess there must be one or two for sale on eBay, but there isn't any....not since I've been paying attention. Not that I want to buy one, but to see what the seller has to say about the piece. Still no luck yet.

Also, the clocks that I was referring weren't wall clocks. They had four(4) sides and each side had a separate dial. They also revolved, and hanging down from the ceiling (outside the store). They were all in green and white colors. With those clocks at their strategic vantage point, the Rolex dealers could be spotted from both ends of the block. They just could not be missed.

Well, those, i doubt the actual movement of the clock was made by Rolex. It's just a basic clock and they put Rolex on there. For advert. The one we got actually came from Rolex. But, I have no idea if Rolex actually MADE it or just put their name on it. I'll look into that.

Thanks, that will be mighty kind of you to do that so that we all can be educated. Is that clock run by electricity or quartz?

Also, does Rolex allow its ADs to sell pre-owned Rolexes?

If I remember correctly, back in the 1980's, almost every "mom and pa" jewelry store carried Rolex watches. In the early 1990's Rolex decided to cut the number of ADs down to merely 200 in the USA. Some expert said that was the smartest move that Rolex had ever done. Am I correct?

It is so nice to have a Rolex AD on this forum. Thank you for being here.

The clock is operated with a battery. Quartz.

Yes, Rolex does allow AD's sell pre-owned. Some have trade-in programs, so they resell the pre-owned. We do not do trade-in's, therefore we do not sell pre-owned. It's mostly up to the AD.

It will be very interesting to find out who made that clock. If it is quartz, it is becoming lesser and lesser chance that it was made by Rolex. It probably has a $10 quartz movement made in China in it. As I pointed out earlier that the clocks that I saw in Hong Kong were different. They were located outside the store and had 4 sides and each side had a different dial. Those were definitely run on electricity because the entired clock lit up brightly from the inside.

All the Rolex clocks you get on e-bay are fakes. They are just cheap knock-offs made to look like either the Sub, GMT-II, LV and what have you.

If you want to see an original one, you'd have to go to your AD. The original Rolex clock has a dark brown wooden border with a "gold" fluted bezel (just like the DJ), "gold" stick markers and "gold" hands. It's very large in diameter too - I'm guessing around 17~18".

I was lucky when I bagged this genuine OMEGA wall clock from an AD here in Auckland after he'd just lost his OMEGA dealership. I literally asked him to take it off his wall and got him to sell it to me.

My punch line to him was: "Why would you want an OMEGA clock up there when you've no longer got the agency and which would probably affect the sales of your TAGs, Raymond Weils and other watches he had in this store?"

It worked....he sold it to me for a song....and this was in 2001. Just changed the single AA battery once since then.

Meanwhile, Kirill is supposed to check his/hers for me. Can you "sweet talk" him/her into sell the clock to me?

Hehe you're such a "sweet talker". You can probably sell water to a drowning man!

So what you saying is that Rolex does make clocks?
Oh, I am sure that most of the "non-watch" Rolex stuff on eBay are fakes. Even some watches too............

I have never seen the clock you described. Where did you see it? The ONLY Rolex clock which I thought there was a chance of being genuine was the aforementioned.

"Kirill" is supposed to check the clock for me. Any chance that you can "sweet talk" him/her into sell the clock to me?

Both my local Rolex ADs have this clock inside their store. These are genuine ones specially sent out to them from Rolex, Geneva.....and they aren't for sale.

All the ones you get on e-bay are cheap replicas.

By "this clock" do you mean the orange one? Strange, I"ve been to so many Rolex ADs but never saw one.

One of our AD's in Wichita (USA) has a big Rolex clock outside the building on a pole. Quite frankly, I don't recall how many sides are on it but I think just two. It's been there for years.

Oh yeah, those pole clocks were quite popular back in the 1930's and 1940's.
But the ones that I saw in Hong Kong were hanging (down) from the ceiling outside the AD stores. They were just a little bigger than a regular clock with a back light illuminating all four(4) glass sides. I think the clock revolved and had a dial on each side, but I am not 100% positive. They were green and white in color.

On the same token seriously, both Hong Kong and mainland China have more McDonald's and KFCs than in the USA. It is NOT unusual to see 2 McDonald's and/or 2 KFCs on one city block. On top of that, those restaurants are huge....some of them have 3 stories.....particularly in mainland China. Sorry...

As I asked in my previous post....do you know if those jewelry stores which display hundreds of Rolexes at their store windows are all Rolex ADs?

A real Rolex clock from the Basel show

It's a back lit kaleidescope and the center rotates in opposite directions--I've had it about 10 years.

Yes, if they are basically jewelery stores selling a lot of gold jewelleries and their names are either starting with 'Chow Sxxx xxxx' (multiple shops on Nathan Road alone) or 'King Fxxk'. They are ADs in Hong Kong. I have bought multiple watches (10+) from either one. The RSC in Hong Kong is located at 14th floor, Jardine House, Central, on Hong Kong Island. You can call them and check on whether the shop is an AD.

The Oriental Watch Company too. Those 3 are the "biggies" in Hong Kong and God knows how many stores they have there and in Mainland China with literally hundreds of Rolexes, Pateks, Audemars on display at their store windows. Looking at so many of those expensive watches, they gave me a false impression that they were a dime a dozen. Their prices, however, are NOT particularly any lower than those in the USA. Don't Rolex ADs have to display some sorta certificate, identifying themselves as such?

The clock looks like it was made in the 1970's with the orange face and all that. So I assume it can't be quartz.

Oh, I am surprised that it is that big. I thought it was the size of a regular household clock. Wow!!
