Wearing a 50+ year old Datejust Daily?
Hello,
I have a question for you experts last year I had my grandfathers 18k gold datejust serviced at RSC. I have pretty much been wearing it everyday and it keeps perfect time. I was showing to someone the other day and they commented they would never wear such a watch on a daily basis? My view is why have the watch if I don't wear it? What are your thoughts? Thanks, BG |

Mine is only 38 years old but I wear mine.
There are number of members with older watches than yours, and I know they wear theirs too. Wear it and enjoy it, that's what they are there for.

You should ask him why on earth he wouldn't wear it every day. See if you can actually get a realistic answer out of him. It's just metal and moving parts - if its tended to, you can wear it every day for another 50 years!
If he think its because it's too fancy for everyday wear, fine, that's his fashion preference. But if its because of the watch's age - hogwash!

Daily isn't the problem. The problem comes when you have multiple watches and can't give your vintage enough wrist time.
I wear my 6305 at least 3 days a week, I try to wear it on even days because I enjoy the red date dial. Bubba - post pictures of your vintage if you could. Cheers |

There can never be too many watches.
Maybe there's just not enough time.

As along you take care of it, it will take care of you. Otherwise all the vintage collectors here would be in trouble!

I wear my birth year watch (6424, 1959) as often as I can. As long as it's serviced, it's good to go.

I've worn my 40 year old ref. 1675 GMT Master more or less daily for the last 7 years. I had it completely serviced (new crystal, crown, crown tube, gaskets) when I got it and then again 5 years later and have had absolutely no issues. Last year, I got a white gold circa 1977 ref. 1803 Day-Date, which is now in regular rotation, also with no issues. Some other vintage watches are fragile, Rolexes are not!

I wear my father's 1950's TOG regularly (not daily anymore) and don't hesitate to use it because it has had a full service. I've also got a gold DJ from about 1966 that gets its share of wear. Once I know they're watertight, I don't worry about wearing them as they were intended.
BTW, your watch is a beauty. |

I would think the watch could handle more abuse then you could throw at it. If any thing it is probably a good thing to wear it. Keeps all those little parts moving freely.
