Diamond earrings from Tiffany. These were for her 40th birthday, and our 10th anniversary combined. Otherwise we don't buy presents for each other at all.

Don't buy material things, buy her a service/experience, e.g. Day spa, weekend in Paris with you, take her to the opera in NYC etc.

A non-stop flight to see the northern lights...

The pilot just flies north following reports as to where they have been spotted. Drinks are served while an expert is on board to give a talk/answer questions.

But then, if I remember correctly, you're Scandinavian so maybe not such a big deal for you guys?

Last year I got the Mrs a bright pink ostrich leather Mulberry handbag plus a few other bits. And pretty damn expensive for a handbag and I made the mistake of saying that looks really cool ...before I checked out the price....

This year it was a TT Cartier Roadster automatic.

I'm dreading next year

Best present I ever got my Mrs was a VIP ticket to see Donny-sodding-Osmond!

She luuuuuuurrrrrrrves him & meeting him was the highlight of her entire life I'm sure!!

Gotta admit though it reminded me of the story when some woman threw her knickers at Tom Jones mid-show while her big burly husband was standing right behind her.

Apparently after the show this knicker-thrower & her rufty-tufty hub' were waiting at the stage door & Tom's convinced the husband's gonna give him a proper good hiding....

So he goes up to hub' & says "Listen mate I'm sorry about that but it's all just good fun y'know?"

...... & the monster-of-a-husband says "That's okay boyo.... you pump up the tyres & I'll ride the bike!"

Draw your own conclusions if you will.......

Is it a "big" birthday, e.g. 30, 40, 50?

I admit that I am picky, but I already have my own perfume, clothing style, etc. I think most women already wear what they like, and know what they do and do not like. My husband would never think of buying me a perfume, clothes, shoes, a purse, etc. Jewelry is tricky as well. He got me my Rolex for our 10th anniversary, but I am so glad that I went with him to pick it out. If he had surprised me with something that he thought I would like, it might not have worked.

Some great birthday presents from my husband have included an IPad (I didn't know how much I needed one until I got mine), fine rollerball or fountain pen, digital camera, a digital picture frame pre-loaded with lots of photos, a massage at a nice spa, etc. Someone else mentioned a concert, or a bicycle, which would be great gifts as well. If she doesn't have an Ipod (there are still a few out there) maybe one pre-loaded with some of her favorite albums. If she has an Ipod, then maybe get a podcast subscription to her favorite radio show, and keep it updated.

My fellow moms (working or stay-at-home) tend to appreciate some "me" time, for pampering. Is there something she would love to get for herself but won't, because she thinks it is too frivolous or expensive? A good massage falls into this category. Or, for another example, does she really love tennis, but uses a cheap racket? Maybe a great coffee/espresso maker that grinds its own beans? (This is about as far into home appliances I would venture for a woman's birthday.)

Wives also love to spend one-on-one time with their husbands...how about a nice romantic evening with the two of you, doing something you loved to do early in your relationship, whether it was bowling or going to a jazz club, with a dinner at the restaurant of her choice?

I just had my birthday a few weeks ago and, honestly, I was very content to with our nice dinner at a fine restaurant (I love getting dressed up) and a home-made birthday card designed and decorated by my husband and kids.

Good luck!

My fiance just turned 30 on September 11 (depressing birthday in so many ways for her.) She wanted an iPhone4 so that was an easy one (which I had to pay the stupid $800 because she just upgraded phones.) I also took her for a weekend in AC with 2 nice dinners and a half spa day for the both of us (I was just going to send her but she was mad that I wouldn't be keeping her company so for the first time in my 27 years I went to a spa.) We are going to look for her some diamond studs when she get back from her little vacation with her Mom in Seattle. Between that and the Sub-C I'm broke. Does anyone need a pool boy???? Don't worry, I look terrible without a shirt on so all your lady friends are safe from me and I somehow managed to out-punt my coverage and snag my fiance so I wouldn't screw that up..... HAHAHA

Why would you buy an iPhone4 3 weeks before the iPhone5 comes out? Patience is a virtue.
