Good afternoon, I have decided I would like to purchase a Submariner. The problem is, after much research, I still dont have a clue on what to pay.

I live in Alberta. I have visited a few Rolex dealer jewelry shops, and have noticed quite a difference in pricing from what I notice on this forum and on the net. 116610LN for 8400+$CAN and 16610 in the same stores for the same price. I feel that they are and can charge shoppers this as a result of ignorance.

So my questions is? how much should I be paying for a Sub 16610LN or a new 116610LN. What's fair?

I appreciate any insight. Thanks

I would buy new from the Authorized Dealer.
Try to negotiate for 10 to 20% discount if possible.
Too many pitfalls to avoid for a beginner.
Buy from AD and you won't spend sleepless nights wondering what if the watch is not real etc.

For a first purchase I agree with the AD route. 116610's in Canada over the last year or so have been bought for between 10 and 30 % discount. I think if you can get 15-20 % you are doing well. (even 10% is ok- don't stress too much about it and you'll enjoy your watch regardless.).

You can also consider buying from one of the "trusted" sellers here in TRF, such as justrolexes (tony), bodybump (oscar), mosco (greg) and davidsw (david) to name just a few....

Welcome to TRF.

Take your time, look around, and do some research. The AD route works for some, while purchasing from a trusted seller on TRF works for others.

The most important thing is that you buy the seller and make sure you get exactly what you are paying for.

Members from Canada have talked about 30% discounts though I can't recall if that includes the Sub. You wouldn't get that kind of discount in the US but I understand prices are significantly higher in Canada so the higher discounting makes sense.

The number of dealers in your area is probably going to be important in influencing how much discounting there is.

I bought my first Rolex when I was clueless, too.

Here's what's important.

Know how much you can afford going in.

Ask the salesman to show you the watches in that range.

Pick the one you like.

Don't worry about the one's that cost more than you can afford, because no sooner than you leave the store, you will already be plotting how to raise enough cash for the next one.

It is hard to make a mistake when you buy a Rolex.

I personally buy from an AD. If you research it you can get as good of a deal from an AD as a grey dealer and you don't have to worry.

At least take some comfort knowing that the model you're looking at is arguably the most iconic model in a line-up of otherwise iconic models. Translation: you can probably sell it very readily for close to what you paid if it doesn't satisfy.
