Going Overseas

I am travelling overseas (southern Europe/North Africa) from the US in September; is there anything I should be concerned about with my sub in terms of customs, particularly comming back to the US? I heard there could be issues when bringing back more than one swiss watch.

If you're taking the ferry from Spain to Morocco, watch out for those damned Barbary Apes on Gibraltar -- they like watches! They are the only free-roaming primates in continental Europe -- that is, besides humans.

Normally it is possible to get some sort of paper for watches identifying them as personal property and that they are not for selling but you need proof that you are the owner I think.

Go to the US Customs web site and register your watches before you go. Take this paperwork with you just as a precaution.

Also be sure to check with your insurance company and notify your agent --- preferably in writing.

S2000 I won't be in Morocco this time but I will look for the camels in Tunisia.

I've lived in both Germany and Sardinia, Italy and toured extensively there.

Thiefs (especially kids) are always on the lookout for a Rolex or other and they will get it off you.

I really don't recommend wearing an expensive watch while in southern Europe / Africa.

Don't put yourself through the worry or possible loss.... Just get a Timex or Casio and have fun touring !

We'll be on a cruise and I was planning on just wearing the watch on the boat (provided that there is a safe in our cabin of course). I had heard that they are pretty stealthy and are able to get your watch/wallet/etc without you knowing. All dinners on the cruise will be semi formal with the exception of two which will be formal (suit required); this is really my only reason for wanting to take one of my good watches there. Seems like it may be more hassle than what it is worth though.

My wife and I frequently travel. Even when going on a cruise ship we leave our expensive jewelry/watches at home. We are insured; however, it simply is not worth the worry to have our nice things with us. We wear plain wedding bands and inexpensive watches. Enjoy your cruise! Cheers, Bill P.

I've never been challenged by customs authorities when traveling internationally.
My GMT Master II was on my wrist in when passing thru customs in BNE, SYD, POM, HON, SIN, NDI, HNL, LAX, LHR and on a Pacific Cruise last year without incident. No-one even gave it a second glance.

One day you can go through customs with several watches (which of course are personal property), on another day you get hassled with just one :) cheap watch if they think you are not paying import taxes (still in the gift box)...
Question of meeting the wrong customs officer at his bad day.
