San Francisco vs San Diego

I made an post earlier about Chicago VS Washington but now I have changed my mind due to the weater as I will be travelling to US for a holiday for around 16 days. I have decided that I will spend 6 nights in NYC then flying south for a better weather.

So from 6 to 16 Jan next year I have 10 days to kill in California.

Now I have booked 5 days in SF and 5 in SD

Just wondering that perhaps I should spend 6 in SF and 4 in SD.. or the otherway around.

Also anyone of you can drop any advice in regards to food and night life in NYC, SF and SD.. anything is appreciated. So far I would be travelling alone.
The hotels are booked but can be changed accordingly upon your suggestions. :D

Easy, 10 days in San Diego. San Fran is foggy, hilly, and Willy (have no idea what that means by the way).

Can you break up your trip in to 3 places in California?
2-3 days in the SFO area, 3-4 days in Santa Barbara & L.A. area, maybe a couple of days between San Diego & Palm Springs??????
Are you driving once you get to Calif.?

If you want to explore Napa, etc for wine tastings and some outstanding dining, add more time to SF, if you're looking for more laid-back beach Vaca, add time in SD.
I've lived in both places. You're going to have a great trip!

IMO San Francisco has better food, better places for sight seeing and Napa/Sonoma.

I have spent lots of time in both and lived in the bay area for a few years.
S.F. can be foggy and cold but lots of great food and napa valley
S.D. beautiful beach and hotel Coronado

Make it a trifecta: spend time in San Francisco, Then drive to Santa Barbara for a few days, then finish off the trip in San Diego...

I don't think you can go wrong either way. SF has a more energetic vibe IMHO as well as better food and close to Napa. SD has the beach, sun and awesome weather.

6 in the SF Bay Area (there are many more things to do and see outside of SF itself). San Diego is great for the beach culture, golf courses and if you like, you can drive into Baja California (Mexico).

Both are great spots. I chose to live in the SF Bay Area over all other spots in CA...(could have lived in SD or the LA area if I wanted to).

The O.P. doesn't drive.......then, IMHO, the best city on the west coast for getting around 'sans voiture".....is the city by the bay.....my town...San Francisco.....you can walk, you can bus, BART, cab, bicycle.....no car, no problem.

well, SF is a MUST. great city....and throw in nearby napa, carmel, etc., and maybe a trip to yosemite (if there isn't too much snow).

i know SD has "america's best weather", but, for an international traveler, i'd say, either go to LA (tourist stuff, beverly hills, malibu, etc.) or, after visiting SF, hop on down to the beaches in mexico for some sun.

Lot's of stuff to do in SF more than San Diego. Sand Diego can be done in 2 days.

2 days in SF, 3 days in San Diego, and 5 days in Los Angeles. Los Angeles is better than both those cities.

The Op doesn't drive and while I agree that LA has a lot to do, you simply cannot get around LA without a car. And, you "must" have a nice car, at that!

Easier to get around the metro San Francisco Bay Area on public transport.....and San Francisco is small enough to walk & if you get tired a cab ride within the tourist areas is not too bad.

He could take the blue line from Long Beach to Downtown... that would be a real eye opener!

(blue line cuts straight through watts, compton, huntington park, south central LA)

I would do 6 days in San Fran and 4 in San Diego unless you really like the beach then maybe spend more itme in San Diego. It really depends on what you want to do.

I'm from SD and live in SF now. Both are awesome. SD is a beach town with a lot of recreational activities (beach, jet ski, zoo, seaworld, retired life-style and of course the 2012 Super Bowl Champs San Diego Chargers); whereas SF is an actual city - more refined if you like theater, fine dining, late nights, wine, etc. I will say the sights in SF are way better, but the weather is way worse.

Well, I have to disagree with one thing, the SF 49'ers will be the 2012 Superbowl Champs
