I Am A Traitor

...well, to the NATO anyway.

Today, I was heading out to the lake for a day on the water. During boat prep, I was hot. My wrist was sweating, and the NATO band was sticking to me. The watch find itself easily off-center, and not comfortable.

I had mentioned in a previous thread that when swimming, the NATO was often uncomfortable because the watch would cant one way or the other, and I would have to manually adjust the positioning.

So, tonight, with the wife's help, I put the SS bracelet back on. But, since I'm partially retarded, it wasn't too easy.

I started on the 6 o'clock position, and put the damn thing on wrong. So, I had to manage to get the stupid thing back off. Now remember -- a week ago I had to take it to an AD to do this. Tonight -- oh hell no! I'm not having a partial upside-down, half-cocked, hanging bracelet. I'd have to take it in like a kid would show a wounded sparrow to his mother...

So, anyway, I got the bracelet back off, then back on, and I'm good to go. Now I know why these things come on SS bracelets instead of cloth straps.

I prefer the factory bracelet too.
NATO can be good for a experimental temporary change, but the bracelet, especially the new model bracelet that goes with the ceramic GMT is unbeatable.
Lucky you had your wife on hand to help you restore your bracelet.

I agree. I'm a fan of the NATO, but after a few days I'm ready to snap the Oyster back on!

NATOs and Zulus are great straps with a Rolex history to them. Give the watch alternate apperance and in certain application are much more comfortable and subdued.

Not a big fan on the Rolex models but I use one for my Citizen dive watch and it works great. It is the only thing that will fit around my thick wetsuit and it looks pretty good on that watch as well.

Well, I wasn't going to say anything, but I used to have this watch (one of the ones that make you wish you had a Rolex) with a pretty good imitation of a NATO strap. I experienced the same off-center and sweat issues. I changed watches to one with a SS bracelet and had better luck, but the steel wasn't 904L and scratched very easily. The NATO straps look GREAT but I'm absolutely hooked on the oyster!

I am glad that your beautiful polished center links Oyster bracelet is back where it belongs. Partnered up with that gorgeous GMT!

Thanks!

After looking at an AD today, I kinda wondered what I was thinking in the first place. The SS is just so bright and pure when comparing to other watches. When the sunlight hits it, it kinda makes you smile... A NATO just can't do that.

To each his own...I think the Nato is the most comfortable strap.

No offense to anyone who likes them, but for the life of me I can't see why anyone would put one of those things on a watch, much less a Rolex.

My brother left 4 NATO bracelets at my place...good shape. I got great pleasure hanging them from a tree up my hill and using them for target practice. Not a bit NATO fan here.

  • Comfort
  • Easy to adjust fit, when wrist size fluctuates duruing physical activity
  • Ability to wear over heavy coldweather gear or diving wet or dry suit (or Spacesuit, as the OMega Speedmaster was worn with a Zulu type strap)
  • Less shiney, subdued for military applications
  • Ability to change look of watch, many color options of Natos/Zulus availiable
  • Historical (Rolex Steger Expedition; British Military issue) and nostaligical reasons (James Bond)
I personally like both the Oyster Bracelet and the Nato/Zulus. Will wear one for certain applications and another for other. Or wear one for a week or so, get bored and wear the other for a different look.
