Watch Snob on the Skydweller

Did anyone else catc this?

Quote:
Sit up and take notice because the Sky-Dweller is the most significant Rolex development since the brand developed its own chronograph movement for the Daytona two decades ago. Never mind that the Sky-Dweller is one of the ugliest watches in existence. Just ponder the mere fact that Rolex has released an annual calendar movement, one with several major innovations, and let it sink in.

Sure, Rolex has always made a fine watch, but its recent focus has mainly been on hairsprings, bezel materials and clasps. And before someone smugly cites the Yachtmaster II, I’ll say that was probably the biggest waste of R&D francs Rolex has ever spent, not to mention a contender to the Sky-Dweller for the ugliest watch title.

As for the Sky-Dweller’s appearance, design has never been Rolex’s strong suit. Let’s face it: All of the Oyster-cased watches are about as comely as a middle-aged Catholic school matron, so expectations are low to begin with. But this watch’s aesthetics look as though there was no budget left after developing the movement, so the same nerds who designed the movement cobbled it together on a weekend retreat. So, to answer your question, the Sky-Dweller is both -- new and exciting and a monstrosity.

You read the watch snob ? With a Panerai as your avatar ? Don't you get tired of hearing him moan about them ?

He basically moans about everything apart from Patek or some other really expensive brand. Every now and then he recommends a cheaper watch like Nomos but that's about it. Also insults people that ask questions which aren't that bad.

Lets face it if he really went to Oxford like he claims and had the massive collection he had. Not to mention "doing laps at the country club pool in a nautilus". I doubt with all those things he would be writing a weekly watch piece for ask men.

Oh he also does things like asking someone with a £5k budget to double it and get a Patek as if it's really that simple.

As far as I know, several people write for that article on a regular basis. As well, he's just got the exact reaction he's looking for out of most people. Obviously those details are all bologna, and 90% of the way he writes is purely for trolling purposes.

A fun read, but don't take it serious.

At least Watch Snob gets the Sky-Dweller. Most of the naysayers don't.

As for the looks, that's wholly subjective and I like the looks just fine and think that it fits well into the Oyster line.

He doesn't seem that consistent when discussing Rolex but I read his column. I hate to say it, but I kind of agree with him when he talks about Panerai.

Ok, so he says its an ugly watch with an interesting movement. Nothing to write home about really. Still I don't get the watch, and I don't think Rolex does either.

Pretty much what the TRF membership has reported through the number of threads and posts on this model. It's diversified opinion in terms of its looks but not many have denied the accomplishment by Rolex in terms of the movement.

As for reading the watch snob.... Entertaining stuff that often brings a smile to my face. This article is no different. Take it with a pinch of salt.

The Snob strikes again! I find him immensely entertaining and to be honest, I find myself agreeing with him most of the time.

This time I agree almost completely with what the Watch Snob has to say, especially his comments on Rolex styling.

Rolex would have done better to make a perpetual calander watch. In my opinion the Sky-Dweller is a wasted effort on a par with the Yacht-Master II.

I agree, there are a number of interesting technical/design achievements, like the annual calendar complication, using the hour markers to indicate the month, and using the bezel to control the adjustment mode. But, I'm not keen about the aesthetics of the watch.
