I have more info now on the 18kt Sub (not originally a 18kt Sub) of my friends. Here's the lowdown on what I know.

He bought in 1993. He traded an 18kt President and some $$ for it. At that time it was new. The Jeweler in Houston had a few of these ALL brand NEW. The movement is from a Submariner, and as far as he (my friend) can remember so is the dial. He knows the BAND and CLASP are aftermarket, but they are 18kt.

The questions he originally had were: whats the value (of course), and without any outer markings (that Im aware of), how do you represent it?

will have much more value if it's refurbished that's for sure. Not being all original it would not be worth much to me anyways. Just my 2c

It sounds very strange.

It was brand new in 1993.

The movement and dial are from a submariner - ok.

That implies that the case/bezel/crown/crystal and bracelet are all secondary market.

The trade value of the gold (185g of 18ct) would be around the $2,300 mark.
The parts would be worth $700-1000.

Your SS sub would be of more value to an enthusiast but perhaps someone else would bid a packet for the frankenwatch, not knowing its heritage.

Not me though, I would have kept the real President and the $$$$$.

No implication necessary, I stated some parts are aftermarket in my original post. I know the case/band/clasp are aftermarket, I'm not sure either way on anything else except the dial and the movement. I can't tell ya about the bezel/crown/crystal.

It definately could use some cleaning up and a little polish. Its a daily beater, not a garage queen. We fish, hunt, change the oil, mow the grass, everything with these watches :)

IMHO, I dont think it will bring enough on resale for you to part with it. Id just keep it as a daily beater. I still cant understand why someone would go to soo much trouble!!???

you mean the dealer going thru the trouble of putting this watch together? My friend didn't go thru any trouble, it was sitting in a case ready to roll when he saw it.

We both figure it wouldn't bring much, its not worth it to him to get rid of, the gold is real, and sitting next to a $20k+ one, its hard to see any difference and thats enough for him to keep it he told me.

there isn't any President parts on it. It has Sub movement/dial and aftermarket Sub case/band/clasp.. So maybe its "an Italian Sub" (or did Subway coin that aready?)

and there's a reason this is done.

Take a solid 18K fake case, band, bezel and clasp...get a real dial, movement and crown. Slap it together and defraud someone - happened to a friend of mine and cost him nearly $10K in lost value. The fake case was so realistic that he didn't find out it was fake until it was sent to a watchmaker for service and they told him he'd been had - everything was real except the case, band and clasp. My friend is a jeweler who had been selling second-hand Rolexes since the 80s.

The thief makes a mint - source the fake "aftermarket" garbage for a few $1000s, get the remaining real parts for cheap, and you have something that an unwary buyer will pay big $ for...

People like that one that sold this watch to your friend should be put behind bars - it's theft, plain and simple.

He wasn't defrauded.... he KNEW the case/band/clasp were all aftermarket. He also knew the movement/dial were genuine Rolex. He's been wearing it for 14 years, he's not in shock that its an aftermarket band, he KNEW what he was buying.

The big question is: Is it a Rolex, or an Italian Sub? (the band is Italian).

Pictures or no pictures, my advice to your friend remains the same as when you asked about it in the first thread.

Post it on ebay.

Describe it fully.

Put up lots of high quality shots. (The watch has some bling; I'll give it that.)

And set a minimum he can live with.

Heck, ask for what he paid for it (cash plus trade in value) and see what happens. If it doesn't sell, wait a while, knock the price down and try again. Rinse, repeat, etc.

It doesn't sound like your friend's in any particular hurry or even all that motivated, so what's the worst that can happen?

IMHO, I'd have a hard time calling a Camry with a Ferrari motor - a Ferrari! That said, as far as representing it, I'd be offer as many known details as possible about it - and let the market drive the selling price (or value if it was for appraisal purposes).
