Chipped Crystal
I noticed a dust sized chip on my Sub saphire crystal the other day which you really have to look for to see. It had to happen when I took a fall a week earlier. My question is, can this happen? I thought it would shatter before scratching or chipping. Can it be buffed out or should I just forget it? Unless you looked for it in the proper lighting you would never see it. Thanks for any advice.

Yes, it can happen. Sapphire is very hard, but also brittle. No, it can't be buffed out. The older acrylic crystals are nice in that you CAN buff them.

RSC will fix it up at the next service, just make sure it's shallow and has not affected the waterproofness of the watch

I've had good luck using cape cod cloth on my crystal to remove subtle scratches.

Thanks for the helpful advice. By the time it goes to Rolex to be serviced I'll probably not be bothered about it and accept it as part of the patina which I'm sure I'll help it to aquire.

If you have insurance and it is indeed damaged(needing replaced) it's now time to utilize it.

If it was a scratch... investing in a dremel and diamond paste would do wonders...
