Is Rolex a Family tradition for you???

I am hopefully starting a family tradition with Rolex. I have given one of my Rolex watches to my father (please see thread) http://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=20821 I have also given Rolex watches to my Mother, Daughter(17y), and my wife (also my mother in-law, the wifey made me do it). We all have Rolex watches and I hope to give one to my son(11y) when he is old enough. Maybe one day I'll pass Dad's watch to my son, and so on and so on and so on!!! I would like to hear stories of how this has worked in other families. Are you wearing your fathers' or grandfathers' Rolex? Have you passed one along? etc...

Yes my grandfather had one, my father has several, I have several, my offspring will have some as well. Rolex is king.

No. But im trying to make it one. I bought my dad one and I plan on passing mine down to my son. He is only 8 months old right now so it will be a while!!!

My dad died a long time ago and always wore a Bulova Accutron. However, both my sons have a Rolex and each will have one more when I wake up on the wrong side of dirt some morning.

My wife and two daughters are "throw away" personalities and buy cheap watches, cheap pens, etc. and use them, throw them away and buy something new and supposedly more "fashionable." I'm suprised wife keeps me around; I'm way past my "best if used by" date. I've bought wife and daughters several nice watches (not Rolexes) and they stay in the drawer; so, I've given up bying for them.

My grandfather had several Rolex watches...and passed a 3 on to my father. But as it turns out...my dad is an Omega man. My brothers were given the Rolex watche left by my grandfather. I was given a new one and am looking to add to my collection.

I am the 1st. My kids will own them too, even if not by choice, when I meet my maker.

Funny you ask... I just gave my Father a Sub Date last night. He was in shock :)

Also gave one to my Brother. He will never take it off.

This winter we'll be giving my inlaws a pair..... Her dad gets the GMT II Red/Black Bezel, and the Mom-in-law gets the lady date.....

We came to the conclusion it's not how many rollies you can collect it's how many family members you can infect :).... and we enjoy seeing them on the family more than in the cases.

We might be doing some int'l work soon so we're looking at all of our material things a little diff these days..... sell the stuff that won't appreciate, spread out the rollies to the family.... and get ready for the NEXT big adventure..... KL might be in the picture :)

My father purchased his Rolex back in '68. He wore it for many years until it ended up in a drawer. He gave me the watch in '06. I have considered giving the watch back to him. I've asked him but he doesn't want the watch back. It's been serviced and works fine. I do plan on giving a Rolex to my son when he's of age. We'll see.

It is not a tradition in my family. My father did not get a Rolex until I had several and I talked him into buying one. I went with him to get it. He bought a Stainless Date on a Oyster dark grey face with the engine turned bezel.

My wife got hers last year as she was not a big Rolex person. She likes Cartier.

As far as down the line as a tradition, we do not have kids so depending on how long I am around, maybe I will split my watches up with my nephews. If I kick before my wife, I want her to do what she wants with them. If she needs them for money, sell them. I know she will hold on to at least one for sentimental reasons. Of course if I kick while she is still younger, I will haunt her if her next husband is sporting my DD or Patek.

I'm the first in my family, that I know of, to own a Rolex. My parents didn't understand my desire to own one or to spend so much money on a watch. Perhaps my daughter will one day share my appreciation for Rolex.

First in my family to own one, but I did buy my wife one at the same time and she is the first in her family as well. Problem is we have 2 daughters so this means I will have to buy my wife another one to hand down.

Not really. My parents have them, but the rest of the family does not see any value in spending $$ on watches.

Mom has a ladies DJ.....SS/YG Gold diamond dial, diamond bezel
Me...had SS 1603 DJ, 16610 Submariner
Wife..6817 SS ladies DJ white dial, WG bezel.

yes, but it is a newer tradition. my in laws have rolexs and gave me my daytona as a wedding gift, they said its the only watch brand they would buy me, and I hope to do the same for my children one day.

I'm hopefully about to purchase my first Rolex - the thought has already crossed my mind to buy my eldest son one when he's 18 and my other 2 sons when they reach age. I'm hoping they will appreciate it and maybe, just maybe, understand their dads obsession for years in wanting one !!
