Prepay for a Daytona in full to get on the waiting list?
There is a out of state AD willing to put me on the waiting list for a daytona for spot#3 if I prepay for the daytona in full in advance ($7900). The price is subject to change if Rolex raise the MSRP. The AD stated that they got about 4 daytonas a year. Do you guys think it is a good idea?
I am not going to re-sell the watch for profit. I fell in love with it the first time I saw it on Rolex's website before knowing anything about its hype or price. I've never bought any watch from any AD in the US before so I don't think I can get on the waiting list otherwise. |

Sounds kind of crazy to me. I’m mean if you are DYING for a Daytona and do not think you’ll be able to find one at retail within the next 6 months or so, why not. If you do it insist on not paying tax and having them ship it over night for free to you.

My AD claims that they get anywhere from 5-10 a year.

Why would a reasonable deposit not be sufficient?

ususally 50% deposit is just fine. I prepaid just because the watches were already in transit to me, basically to show good faith.

I can't say they're scarce..Go to Vegas..
I was just by the BB in only 1 mall and they had several Daytonas in the display cases...They're there all the time.. I know that Wynns, Caesers, and the Canal Shops always have them too.. |

Larry,
Were the Daytonas you saw SS? Most AD have an abundance of white gold, TT, etc. but no SS. |

If you trust the AD and he can guarantee you you'll get one within 12 months then I would seriously consider it. Many wait much longer with subsequent price increases when they finally get called. With interest rates so low right now what kind of return could you really get on $8,000 within one year. However, make sure it is 100% refundable at your discretion. That way if one pops up beforehand you're there.

Yup, it is 100% refundable. This is the first time I deal with this AD so I don't know how trustworthy they are but they have been in business for over 20 years. I don't mind waiting for 6 months as long as I could get it at MSRP.

wow sounds great. not the opportunity itself, but the business tactics i mean. if i can get full payment of $7900 from everyone on this board, then i promise to try to get them a watch in 6 months...and if i dont, i will refund your money, shoot, i would reinvest the cash in a 6 month cd or high yield money market, and return your money later on and give you $100 back for your trouble lol....i still walk away net net way ahead and make friends for trying plus make more friends when i give a 100bucks!!!
sounds lame. dont pay in full dude, unless it's guaranteed!!!!! |

I did not even think of this. What if for some crazy reason the AD went out of business and they had your deposit and others? What do you think the chances are they would get their deposits (in thsi case the full price of the watch) back? That is one more reason why I would avoid doing this.
My recommendation is find a few AD's near you and go in and make friends with the sales associates. Do not even ask about the Daytona the first few times you visit that AD. Just talk about other Rolex models and get to know the sales staff. Then after you have created a relationship, hit them up to be put on the list. The sales associate will feel obligated to put you on the list and your chances, I think, will be much greater of getting a Daytona. Make sure you visit periodically after being put on the list. This strategy with a little patience works. |

My AD also claims to get 5 SS per year. Maybe some dealers get more than others?

In Vegas they put the white gold models in the cases....not the SS ones. The white gold look like SS to the viewing customer. The SS Daytonas are already sold before they hit the dealers to the people on the "lists". The way to get on a list is to buy several watches from the dealer or have some social or professional advantage he/she will gain by selling to you. It makes sense that if you qualify to be on a list based on these very subjective and self created standards, you should be able to give the dough to the dealer and do your wait for an SS Daytona....not a bad idea.
But people on this list have to understand that these watches are not discounted ever, they are rare enough that if a store goes out of business, there will always be a profitable grey market for the seller so they have no motivation to run specials on SS Daytonas. There are hundreds of AD's who would sweep them up in 5 minutes with a phone call so that the AD could exercise the AD Daytona power on his/her own customers. You see, there is as much socal status and prestige and power for an AD to deliver this watch to a favored customer as it to get one....so the AD's sparingly and with great selection distribute them to people they feel are deserving. Totally subjective. No rules of due process. No real fairness. No first in line gets the prize. You have to be Machiavellian to get these babies. Blue Bull is "The Prince" of this list in this regard, or lives in an anomolous SS Daytona paradigm. Now look at Kansaivet....he has bought what...5 Rollers from his AD???? He was "due". He got that watch as his 5th...not his first or second. That is how it generally works unless you have some unusual prominence or social advantage to lend to the AD. As I said, the guy who got the last SS Daytona from my AD is a prominent orthopedist who has bought 3 watches there....he asked if his friend, another physician, could be next on the list. They told him categorically no as the other guy was not a customer, had not bought anything there before, and they would not sell it to him even if he prepaid for it. So if you want an SS Daytona....it is like getting your Eagle Scout badge.....lots of other merit badges precede it.....Is it really worth all this hype when there are other wonderful watches out there? Probably not on its merits. It is a great watch I am sure, but why is it any nicer than the WG? Who knows. It is only so because it has become a "signifier".....and is valuable largely for the significance we give it.....like the significance people give anything rare. Having one is a rare thing.....like being with a certain class of rarely beautiful women...this watch feeds egos and is a collectors item. Nothing wrong with that, but remember it is just that. It says more about the owner than it says about itself. And what is says is by no means negative. This watch might make one feel like a rare man....not a bad way to feel. But it is the "rareness" and scarcity that appeals...not really the merits of the watch over other wonderful choices....I shouldn't talk....I am on one of these lists myself. |

Oh, and I think giving a 100% deposit to your AD is NUTTSO!!!! No reason he can't do the same deal for 1K deposit. Sheesh. What a con-artist......gets 7,900 worth of sales commission in his pay packet up front!!! |

If the AD that has my name on the list asked me to put a small deposit, I would to show them I was serious and ready. But I would want a time frame of when I was going to receive the watch by.

Well, I would pay the price in advance, if I were you, if that makes you get the SS Daytona.
European AD don't do such deals, however. Either you are "connected" and get the SS Daytona fairly quickly at list, or you wait the required time on the waiting list, or you pay a premium to buy one at the grey market. That's the only ways in Europe!

Just call and verify that they are actually a Rolex AD, and ask them if the deposit is refundable.
