What is a tri compax?
Is it the arrangment of the sub dials on a chronograph?

It is a series of Universal watches, chronograph, probably referring to the 3 sub dials.

If I remember correctly the watch on the back of "A complete price guide for watches" shows one.

I always thought that the Tri compax was sub dial arrangements of 9, 6 and 3.

vernon,
you might be thinking about the Universal Genève CHRONOGRAPH COMPAX - that is the one with the sub dial configuration you mentioned |

Just don't try to set it w/o the manual at hand.

it's actually pretty easy -- moonphase at the 12 o'clock along with the date, month and day beside it, and then just a simple chrono -- nothing to it

Tricompax was a watch model from Universal Watch Co. but is also generally used for the subsidiary dial arrangement where you have subsidiary dials at 3, 6 and 9:
