Safety in wearing my Sub in China?
Hi all,
I am departing on a business trip to Hong Kong this week. My trip will also take me to Shenzhen, China. Can anyone tell their experiences with China? Is it safe to wear my Sub in Shenzhen? Thanks, Arron |

Hi Arron,
Have no fear wearing your Rolex in Hong Kong, that is a place where you can see a huge amount of people actually wearing their Rolex, lots of shops also selling real Rolex. Now there is also a lot of dodgy sellers selling fakes, especially near Tsim Sa Tchui area. Hong Kong is safe no problem there. For Shenzen I believe it is quite safe too, unless you want to go in the dodgy backslippery streets... I believe it is ressembling Hong-Kong more and more, and therefore must be OK, but I never been there. I wore my GMT-II Pepsi at Hongkong and in Shanghai and Suzhou ( 40mn west of Shanghai by train... ), never felt unsafe for me or my watch. I hope that helps. Cheers / Pierre |

Worn my Rollie in China (HK/ Shanghai) with total confidence - you will see a lot more Rolex in Hong Kong, but China is pretty safe as long as you avoid the obviously sleazier parts of town.....
have a great visit....check out the AD's in HK- Awesome. |

I would say it is pretty safe wearing a sub in Shenzhen. When you get there, you will find a huge supply of Rolex replica, including the sub of course, selling at $30 each. You just can't tell whether it is a fake without a very careful inspection in hand.
It not easy to let you real sub surface in the ocean of fake there. However, one thing to bear in mind, do NOT ever let go your sub to somebody or it may return as a falk one. |

I've just returned home from a trip encompassing Xiamen, Wuhan, Shanghai... and Manila...
No worries. SS Sub Date all the way baby as no time zone changes. Only exception is that I wore a NATO strap the entire time, which is standard for my Sub these days. |

i was just in HK and China. Have no fear. Your watch is perfectly safe...everyone will assume it is just another fake! However, as a word of caution: do not sit idle during the plane trip. I developed a pulmonary embolism as a result of sleeping most of the 14 hour plane trip...if you feel a severe leg cramp that seems to go on forever, get to a hospital ASAP. I didn't, and the clot (that I thought was the leg cramp) traveled to my lung :-(

Well, I have never been to China, but I would say that EVERY place in the world is potentially unsafe.
No matter WHERE you are, you can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I suggest that you just take care not to flaunt your Sub in places where you could be assaulted, and that is just a piece of general advice.

Shenzhen is fine. You shouldn't have trouble. Lots of rich HK expats go shopping there regularly. You won't stick out as the only guy with a real Rolex on.
Get some suits and shirts while you're there. I use Maxwell's, but there are plenty of other good places. http://www.maxwellsclothiers.com/ |

Thanks for all of he replies.
I was considering shopping for a TT Sub while in Tsim Sha Tsui. I'll be staying at the Langham hotel. Does anyone have a few recommendations on watch dealers in Hong Kong? Of course not the $30.00 TT Subs. Since Hong Kong is the land of Rolex are there deals to be made on used models? -Arron |

in the People's Republic of China, assault on a foreigner is punishable by death or at the very least, a very very very very long prison sentence. You are not likely to be bothered by anyone. That said, don't take the Rolex off your person for any reason when out of your hotel room. And.....have a wonderful time!

No problem at all in Hong Kong or China. People there will probably think you are strange, as a Westerner, if you are not wearing a high end watch!!!
Have traveled all over China and Hong Kong, no issues. |

I've been living in Shenzhen for almost 6 years. Work takes me all over China. Go to Hong Kong at least 2-3 times a month. Never felt worried about wearing my Rolex. Like others have said, in HK Rolex or pricier watches is not uncommon. In China everyone wears fake watches especially Rolexes so you will just blend in.
I've heard stories of people getting robbed of their cash and handphones in China but never watches - there is probably no market for them. |

They have great Pizza in China! Pizza Hut and many others! And Starbuck, Walmart, McDonalds, KFC, etc... Kind of sad actually. I liked China in many ways a little better, when I first started going there 13 years ago. Less Westernized and commercialized. Of course you can still get some good Chinese Food in China! (of course there they do not call it Chinese Food, they just call it Food! LOL LOL LOL LOL)

I've been to Hong kong, Bejing, Xion (sp?) and Shanghi with my GMT (in the summer with with short sleeves) in 1998 and not never feared for my safety. Just like most places be aware of surroundings and insure your watch with a personal articles floater.
