Maybe the first real daytona winner's watch
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-Dayton...8#ht_500wt_922
Worth reading seller's comment: UP FOR AUCTION IS MY ROLEX DAYTONA WINNER'S WATCH. THIS IS THE GENUINE ARTICLE AND WAS AWARDED TO ME AS A TROPHY WHEN I WAS PART OF A 4 DRIVER TEAM THAT WON THE GT CLASS AT THE PRESTIGIOUS ROLEX 24 @ DAYTONA IN A PORSCHE 997 GT3. IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE AND A HUGE HONOR TO HAVE WON THIS EVENT. HOWEVER, I DO NOT WEAR THIS (OR ANY OTHER WATCH) AND IT SHOULD BELONG TO A COLLECTOR RATHER THAN JUST SIT IN A BOX. THIS IS A VERY SOUGHT AFTER PIECE OF RACING AND ROLEX MEMORABILIA AND MIGHT BE THE ONLY ONE IN PRIVATE HANDS FOLLOWING THIS SALE. THERE ARE MANY REPLICAS AS WELL AS THE 1992 MODELS THAT WERE SOLD IN LIMITED PRODUCTION TO THE PUBLIC. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY GENUINE. YOU WILL BE BUYING THIS WATCH DIRECTLY FROM THE WINNING DRIVER AND THE SERIAL NUMBER CAN BE VERIFIED BY ROLEX AS THE WATCH AWARDED TO ME BY THE PRESIDENT OF ROLEX AND RICHARD PETTY ON THE PODIUM AT DAYTONA. SEE THE PICTURE IN THE LISTING. I HAVE WORN THIS WATCH A DOZEN TIMES OR LESS IN THE 5 1/2 YEARS IT HAS BEEN IN MY POSSESSION AND IT IS IN PERFECT CONDITION. IT IS ENGRAVED WITH THE ROLEX 24 INSIGNIA AND THE WORD "WINNER" ACROSS THE BACK OF THE WATCH. IT COMES WITH THE BOX & TAGS AS SEEN IN THE PICTURES. PLEASE DO NOT ASK ME MY RESERVE PRICE OR MAKE AN OFFER TO "BUY IT NOW". SEVERAL DEALERS HAVE OFFERED TO BUY THE WATCH, BUT NOBODY CAN ESTABLISH THE VALUE SINCE THERE ARE NO COMPARABLE SALES. ALSO, DO NOT ASK ME FOR THE SERIAL NUMBER. PROVIDING THE SERIAL NUMBER MAKES IT POSSIBLE TO CREATE A FAKE "WINNERS WATCH". THE WINNING BIDDER WILL RECEIVE THE SERIAL NUMBER ONCE THE DEPOSIT IS TRANSFERRED. IF RESERVE IS NOT MET, THE HIGH BIDDER (AND ONLY THE HIGH BIDDER) WILL BE OFFERED THE WATCH AT A SET PRICE. THANK YOU AND HAPPY BIDDING! |

Actually, it appears to be a correct presentation box with ROLEX in honking big letters, all the better for the media to see it.
As to the eBay blurb and the watch, the 2007 GT class was indeed won by the #22 Porsche 997 driven by owner Carlos de Quesada, Jean Francois Dumoulin, Scooter Gabel and Porsche factory driver Marc Basseng. Also, the seller has tons of positives for Porsche cars and racing parts, so who knows.............

I am a long time car guy having owned a Porsche restoration shop for several years and simultaneously racing professionally (Most notably I won the Rolex 24 @Daytona in recent years) & working as a racing instructor for Panoz & Porsche. I have more cars than I have time to enjoy. Same user name and story. This does not confirm or reject anything just adding out of interest. |

The tag is right and serial is Z which is appropriatish to 2007.
Like someone mentioned before me, he has 100% positive feedback for Porsche cars and parts and this feedback goes back many years. Given that he won't budge on his reserve price and is willing to give the serial number after a deposit is received, also sounds ok. Not sure if he would match up a tag and this story after many years on eBay just to scam someone once? The box seems to match the one in picture from Motorsport.com The ONLY thing that raises a flag to me is that he knows that the watch is special, he knows it will potentially bring a respectable amount of money, so why not invest into having someone take better pictures? He's in Tampa, someone should go check it out in person. |

I don't believe it for one second...all that buildup and the watch is only going for $8K? I'm not touching it.

Send a pic with your face and the watch. Let's see if it matches podium pic.

I saw this watch a few days back on ebay and was curious. Definitely makes me wonder what the deal is with it. Seems like it could be the real deal but I don't have enough knowledge on it to make a decision. I will say that most of the fakes I've seen that are stamped winner rolex on the back are immitations of the white gold model with the black racing dial outlined in red. Also, have they faked these boxes in the past? I've seen fake boxes but none that look like this? Especially with the different top etc...

Seems kinda suspicious. I did find the info that correlates to the pictures on ebay. The blurry pictures are what makes me leery. But who knows? It's possible I guess.

You didn't look in Wikipedia very hard. The facts are: The GT class was won by the #22 Alegra Motorsports/Fiorano Racing Porsche GT3 Cup car driven by Driver/Owner Carlos de Quesada, Jean Francois Dumoulin, Scooter Gabel and Porsche factory driver Marc Basseng.[1] That part seems pretty clear to me. The only question is whether this watch is actually tied to that event.

Carlos is president of Alegra Motorsports which is Tampa-based and a well-respected guy. I doubt he's selling his watch, but Scooter is also Tampa-based and could be scrambling for some cash. Jean-Francois lives in Canada and Marc in Germany; unlikely they are involved in this sale.
If you are seriously interested in buying the watch maybe call Carlos directly to see if he thinks it's legit. Contact info on website: http://www.alegramotorsports.com/ - In the spirit of full disclosure I am bidding - If it's Carlos selling, I assure you it's legit. But he may also know if Scooter is selling. BTW, Carlos' dad was one of the inventors of Gatorade (he was a physician at UF then) just a factoid. Nice guys on and off the track. [edit: after looking at the pics in the auction closer, the guy shaking Richard Petty's hand is actually Marc. Don't know that it matters but wanted to be clearer. Here are some closer pics with better focus of that podium.] From L-R in firesuits are: Jean-Francois Dumoulin, Marc Basseng, Scooter Gabel, Carlos de Quesada

His response "added a photo of the paperwork and listed the clasp number. The clasp couldn't be photographed clearly. As the ad states, it comes with the box, papers and tags just as it did when it was handed to me. I don't wish to provide any other numbers for fear of a counterfeit being produced. I hope you undersatnd.
Thanks". What is he so worried about??? |

FWIW, in general, drivers don't really want other drivers in their stuff. The team ran Trans-Am last year but isn't running a full season anywhere this year. Just tough times in racing with sponsors either pulling out altogether or cutting support. Full time funded rides are only going to the top drivers so selling stuff is how some survive for another season.

The engraveries on the back of the watch look (the pics are very bad) different from the usual fakes we saw on EBay.
Thanks to those who did all the checks and sent emails to the seller. I find strange why the seller is so protective about the serial number. The winner of the watch can have it only after sending the money??? Very reassuring... If the winning bidder is a member of TRF, please keep us posted. I find this bid very interesting. |

I would meet in person to check it out and pay in person... I don't trust Ebay even if it was the CEO of Rolex and he had 10000% positive feedback.
Pictures can be stolen, accounts can be stolen, your money can be stolen. Sorry for the rant, I got burned a few years back and vowed to never spend more than $20 on an item on ebay. |

I wouldn't trust it simply because of the out of focus, grainy photos. How can you possibly see enough detail? Too risky for my hard earned dollars.

I guess with all the fake "Daytona Winner" Rolexes that are out there, it is very hard to believe that this one in the common market could be real. With all the evidence to back this one up, it seems plausible that it is real, but I personally wouldn't take the chance.

I would also say I think the value of the watch would also be determined by who the driver is. A Hurley Haywood watch would be worth considerably more than lets say the one that Steven Bertheau won in 2011. He was a paying driver that drove a total of around 30 minutes before Andy Lally, Spencer Pumpelly and Wolf Henzler took over and did the majority of the work. Steve is a nice guy, but was just basically a "club racer" that paid to drive. Just my opinion others may differ !
