The DateJust II
Last Thursday I took the morning off and visited the local AD with my wife. It is her 40th birthday soon so wanted to buy her a new watch.
She had already discounted the 26mm datejust as being too small so I wanted to show her the 31mm models. Anyway she decided on a 34mm perpetual date that had been for sale in the window. She has never been a 'watch person' but she's really fallen for the Rolex. I hadn't expected a purchase so agreed to go back the following day to pay and collect it. I spent the evening perusing the Rolex catalogue and became particularly interested in the DJII. Doesn't get much a mention on the forums. My other Rolex are all sports models so fancied something a little more formal. However couldn't justify the £6100 price as an impulse purchase. However on returning Friday a DJII had appeared in the window, preowned but unworn with stickers. Had fancied the blue but the black matt dial looks very versatile. Also given the saving on new it was a no brainer. Someone was coming to view it that afternoon so I had second refusal. Got a phone call to say the manager had steered the customer into buying something else. Some things are just meant to be. Left work early and picked up my new DJII. I've promised my wife I'll sell my Ingenieur to subsidize it but I never commited to when. The DJII is absolutely lovely on the wrist. Expected it to be huge but fits nicely. Perhaps it is the matt black dial that tricks the eye. The fluted bezel looks wonderful in the light. I've a 36mm Explorer and it is just a little too small for me. Tend to wear 40mm anyways with exception of the DSSD at weekends. Only downside is my Rolex AD as with many AD's in the UK is losing the Rolex brand. They just couldn't satisfy all that Rolex were demanding despite Rolex not offering any security over their investment. Rolex appear to just want a small number of boutiques and doing away with the small independents. Here's a few pics Wife picked this one - Taken in poor light and picture doesnt do it justice. This was in the window - Given the price I couldn't refuse. My wife was satisfied they are significantly different not to be labelled as his 'n' hers. |

Nice score. Hope you both enjoy them in good health. Our AD's have suffered the same fate. The best one here in my town lost Rolex after 46 years, through no fault or their own. I love Rolex watches, but they have no regard or loyalty for their dealers who helped make them what they are today.

The service provided by my local AD has always far exceeded that of the large jewellery chains. When I bought my SubC Lv in November they gave me 13% off and a bottle of champagne. I used to admire their window display even as a child. I believe Omega are also pulling out of the independents. The Manager although extremely disappointed to be losing Rolex is now looking to expand their used Rolex stock. Can't see me ever buying new again.
The two I bought last week were pre owned but as new in box. Everything present including the bezel covers. Both just out of Rolex warranty but 12 month shop warranty and a combined saving of almost £5k compared to RRP. Enough to cover the odd service I say. two great pick-ups! well done and happy birthday to your wife.
you have to wonder how many of these "just stopping in"/"accidental" purchases watch makers will lose out on with the move to boutiques. |
