Investing in hard assets requires knowledge and an eye for long-term value.

If it was a great opportunity, methinks the Oracle of Omaha would be into it.

Many TRF'ers are eminently qualified to invest and prolly have great collections that appreciate.

For me, it's more gratifying to wear and enjoy.

I was actually interviewed about a year ago for a similar story by a reporter for NPR. I guess he couldn't sell it to the higher ups. I had fun talking about watches as I always do and of course, he had his own personal questions to ask.

Exactly. They're talking about small batch/limited editions of tourbillons and minute repeaters made by Patek and Lange, not mass market brands like Rolex or Omega.

I saw the article...it confirmed what I've been told many times, that a Rolex on the wrist can instantly convert into cash in many countries.

Imho this is something of a myth... a Rolex can be converted into cash - as can most jewellery - but how much, and from whom? I expect the reality is much less attractive than 'instant cash' sounds. In my humble experience, used watch dealers will either offer you rock bottom or (more likely) want a commission sale arrangement. Of course Rolex is an internationally recognised brand and arguably has the easiest resale of all watch brands (depending on the model), so this helps

I would like to hear from someone who has actually done this in a foreign city i.e. liquidised their watch to help in a difficult situation

I 'liquidated' my TT blue sub in Bogota, Colombia, to help in a difficult situation. It wasn't a difficult choice, though. He had a 9mm and I didn't.;)

As soon as a Roxex watch is purchased the buy price to those 'in the know' reverts to 60% of retail. Factor in a further reduction based on it now being 'used' and a further reduction based on 'actual' condition and we are fast heading towards an article that now worth 50% of retail.
The 'want' or 'availability' factor might increase the desirability of particular models and WE all know the cost of that factor.
Yes a Rolex can be converted to cash - visit any pawn shop.

Investing your cash. Interest rates are low, bricks and mortar not fairing much better. Collectables etc. keep up.

I have collected watches over for over 15 years. I actually traded in the early 2000's for a couple of years on the side to fuel my passion. You can make money on watches. There is a global market for it but you have to be extremely active to make money. Simular to a hedge fund. Some Of the comments above are spot on. It is how you buy and when you sell it that makes it an investment or not. If you don't do it full time like a trader, don't think of it as a investment. It is a consumption.

It is interesting that part about a good rolex being universal currency. In 2003 I was in Astrakhan Russia needing about five thousand USD, not to go into details but it would have really, really, sucked if I could not get the cash.

I called my main bank (Wells) where I had plenty of money... nothing. Thank god for my Citibank card, they came through for me, found the closest place and called a head to get things cleared.

I guess writing that I could have flown back to Moscow, got money, and flown back, or maybe Volgograd? In any event interesting that Rolex has a universal name and worth. (Not going to travel with my original papers and boxes though :-)
