just to check - you do know its got a later replacement white gold surrounds dial dont you ?

just checking as i am aware it was on ebay this morning , i'm thinking you may not have paid yet and may wish to be in possession of the full facts before you do.

I'd like to give you same answer i gave the person who inquired this am....dial is service replacement, and i have only seen colouring like that following water ingress..so i would want to look closely at the movement.

the dial, hands, bezel, crown, glass are all replaced and the case is failry heavily polished.....

but if its the right price and movt is ok ...a good beater.

Seller said " The watch is in EXCELLENT condition and in perfect working order and all the functions work as they should."

I already paid for it ($3750 + shipping) is it a good price?
What movement should it have (I am assuming 1520 correct?)

I have not received the watch yet (the seller seem to be a trusted seller with 100% positive feedback - I can get back to him if there is something alarming)

I just contacted the seller and "the 1520 movement is in great condition and has been serviced not long time ago"

I will have my local watchmaker check it and let you know.

Yes I do know (You're right the Submariner for the 1969 Model is supposed to be below the Depth rating) I just love the orange patina on it ...

Actually the watch should have a meters first dial....which is a tad harder to source if one
desires a period correct piece.

Should have the twinlock crown, wrong dail, the lugs were polished too much.
Although RSC upgraded the twin locks to trip locks.

If you know all this and does not matter to you, enjoy it.

Is it me or does it look like the bezel insert was "shaved" down??? Look at the top of the 10 and 50. Something does not look right.

This dial is obviously not a period correct dial, but it seems the buyer does not care, as he likes the patina and it will be a daily wearer I suppose. The watch is definitely not worth less than if this later dial would be in a period correct later (80ies) case. On the contrary, you can still source a period correct dial and make it worth more (provided you get a period correct dial at a reasonable price).

History of the Rolex Submariner 5513

1962 --- The Submariner 5513 was first released.

GILT
Between 1962 & 1966 ( 5xx,xxx - 1,4xx,xxx ) --- Dials were GILT and were metres first. "200m = 660ft"

Metres First
End 1966 ( 1,5xx,xxx ) --- Gilt dials were replaced with the Matte metres first dial, which continued till around 1969 ( 2,3xx,xxx). Some believe that it went all the way till 2,7xx,xxx...but this is doubtful & collectors shy away from anything above 2.3 million.

Feet First
During 1969, Rolex changed the dial to feet first. Rumour has it that it was due to the expanding USA market.

In 1972, Rolex replaced the Twin Lock with the Trip Lock.

Maxi Dials
In 1974 ( 3,7xx,xxx ) --- Rolex introduced the MAXI Dials - of which, there are 5 variants. The Mark V Maxi continued till mid 1984.

White Gold Gloss
In 1984 (8,5xx,xxx), Rolex replaced the last Matte Dial with the new Tritum gloss dial (White Gold Surrounds). These remained in place until 1989/1990 (L Series).

You're right kooltzar, I bought this and I was aware of the dial and hands replacement (that is not the right one) and case polishing; but not for the rest (like no twinlock crown and shaving on the crown which Lawrence noticed)
What made me buy it was the unusual patina on the dial and of course the low price (I joined the bid during the last 4 minutes so I did not have much chance to analyzed it prior to purchase)

But if the correct dial is Feet first (I will look for the right dial and twinlock and check if there is a good investment to increase its value)

Any idea about a price range of the correct dial?
Any idea about If can put back the twinlock and prices?
