1977 Datejust Authentication Help
I purchased this watch on eBay not too long ago from a seller with a good history.
I posted a picture of the watch a couple of days ago and I have had a few people show concerns that the magnification was off. I took it to a few jewelry stores and they right off the bat said it was authentic (without looking at the internals). I would be much obliged if you all could take a look and help me set my mind at ease! One of the authorized Rolex dealers told me vintage Rolex watches may not have the same magnification because it is an acrylic glass -- not sapphire. I have not heard of that and thought they were all 2.5x. Here are a few more pics http://imgur.com/a/YQv5F Thank you! |

yes that is an oval link usa 14k/ss band , as for the crystal mag, i only could open the ebay link ? anyway sometimes that is because i am suppose to be at work and they block a lot of crap with filters, anyway the watch is old and used and it could be a simple case of the last owner/seller replacing the crystal with a non original one of inferior aftermarket quality and low mag. This technique of identifying a fake via date magnification holds true on new watches sure, but not a older watch like this that has passed through many hands and has no know service history. The watch looks fine model 16013 in the right age range to be in 14k an stainless.

Looks authentic but in rough shape.
The bezel looks smoothed out, the date wheel has scratches and the crystal looks to be aftermarket. I'm not sure what you paid for it but I'd have a good watchmaker go through it and look at getting that date wheel replaced.
