what happens after you got your grail?

2. Immediately look for another watch/grail.

3. Totally lost interest in other watches except that grail....happily ever after.

A grail is a watch you will never be able to have...That being said, I am a step 2 person.

That's a bit depressing...

For me, it's attainable, but not something that you can just wait a month for and buy. It's something you gotta put hard work into and have to save up a long time for.

What about a 5th option?

- Obtain the grail, marvel that the day has come and bask in all its glory. Then realize you spent a ridiculous amount of money on it, feel depressed, conflicted, think about returning it, and then come to terms with the purchase. And never buy another one again since the grail is THE ONE. And when you do think about buying another one, all it takes is a quick look at your wrist to realize you spent a crazy amount of money and you're not going to do that again.

My grail is evolving- At first it was a two-tone Daytona, then it was a full on gold Daytona, then I thought about a YG GMT, then YG sub, thought about a JLC Deep Sea, and then maybe a Patek Caltrava. I'm think solid gold as the grail. And then I'm done and out.

....the one you got wasn't really ever your grail then.
if you got it, then it is the center piece of your collection, everything else is an add on, it sits on your watch throne. I might be even reluctant to wear it.
Grail is grail, attained or in the AD.

I haven't gotten the "grail" watch yet. And probably won't for a while. I'm okay with what I have... but admittedly, my addiction is forming into something new and positively emotional for me.

I have gone through this with cars. In my mid-30s as I was climbing the corporate ladder, my grail car was a new BMW M3. I had been driving Bimmers since 1992. And after I got my grail M3, just a few months later, wanted more, faster, better, and more expensive. The emotional drive continued for many years. And after acquiring a few more sports cars the addiction was finally broke when my Son was born. It was time for me to let the sports cars go and think "differently" about what was more utilitarian. And they way I drove those cars, was surely to put me either in the hospital or worse. And I couldn't do that to my Wife and Son.

Nonetheless, the shift was positive and although I may not own M3s anymore, I have a vehicle that I feel is as good and fits the needs of my counterparts. Maybe the same thing will happen with watches, who knows. But I will admit, after getting my first Rolex, everything else I put on my wrist, in my humble collection, is feeling, well... a little passive.

So I've decide to liquidate my humble little collection and put the funds towards another Rolex.

For me, what people tend to refer to as a grail is just an aspirational purchase.

But once it's achieved, your horizon's inevitably change and something else becomes the focus of your attention.

IMO, a "true grail" is most likely to be a completely unobtainable purchase that may take decades to achieve, if indeed it ever is...... or more likely requires a lottery win or dramatic change in financial circumstances.

But.... clearly, if ever achieved...... it's got to be No.2........

If you were to buy it in one fail swoop due to a lottery win or sudden windfall it would lose half its magic and just wouldn't be the same. It's happened to me. The quest alas is just as important as the achievement.

That may be true for you and some people but not for everyone. That hasn't been my experience when buying a few at once. I appreciate my pieces when I wear them, and they continue to be magical.
