Recession Hits Home
I don't post many threads but I do read everyone. Just waiting for the day when I could again justify buying a Rolex. I just need to vent. Well 17 years of being an Electrician just went down the tubes. Today I was laid off. The Housing Industry has died. Being a father of 6 with half of them grown things were starting to look better. The better part of my watch collecting are older Seiko automatics. I have had the fortune of owning several Rolexs in the past(a Pepsi Gmt and a 5513 Sub, both being very affordable at the time) but when the family started growing there values were put to better use. Sad part is my wife understanding my watch sickness for a non date Sub had just made a deal with me last week. Coming up on my 48 birthday in a few months she said I really ought to consider quiting smoking. Her deal to me was I take the money I spend on cigaretts every week and open a savings account to save for a new 14060. When I had enough money in the account I could buy it. The plus being I quit cigaretts. It would have been a long year but it would have been worth it. My wife is at work now we are lucky she has a good job but things will be tite. And it sure is a blow to the ego. Reading you guys post sure helps me smile. JJ and Jocke you 2 crack me up. East Bay Rider I love your avatar. Al your signature is great. Ed your avatar Sub add is one of the reasons for my love of watches I remember that add while I was growing up. Bo, Velitsko, Scott, Larry, C.J., Paul, Mike, Paulie, Allan, Jason, Dan, Padi56, Eddie, Karis, KansaiVet, Fraser, your all a great group of people. Sir I really like you Seiko 173. Vukota you have some nice Seiko's. Mailman Is T alive or.... I love the Sopranos. And last Pat you forum name says it all, Incurable. Thanks for listening everyone; Jim

Sorry to hear that Jim...
But I've been there....I was an Air Traffic Conroller in 1980...When you've been fired by the President of the United States, it's hard to get a decent job right away.... Things will turn around, they always do..... That Rolex is going to be just arond the corner....

I am sorry to hear that Jim. This housing market is really a big problem. I have my Minnesota house rented and I am in a rental home here in Annapolis. Hopefully this thing will turn around in 2008.

Jim,
One door closes and another opens up. You'll come out of this. Might take time and nobody likes being forced into anything but what doesn't kill ya' will just make ya' stronger! The fact that you sacrifice for your kids will come back to you. I've been thru a few changes in the last couple years and can tell you it's possble to come out better on the other side. And what the hell, ain't we supposed make big changes in our lives by the time we're 50? All the best to you and your family. I see a day, in the not so distant future, with you wearing another Rolex with pride. dP

I'm rooting for ya Jim! I went 9 months after the dot-com I was working for bounced paychecks for 6 weeks. You have the spouse, so that's a big help.
The quitting smoking deal is a great offer, do it but I'd just keep the cash in reserve. There will be plenty of time for more watches in the future. Rolex is making a million a year, they won't be running out anytime soon.

Jim, I'm sorry to hear about your situation. Hang in there! There are situations in life where your priorities have to change and focus on more important things than Rolex watches. I'm sure you will get through it and the smile on your face when you put on your 14060 eventually will just be that much bigger.

Sad to hear. As others have said, keep your head up and use this episode to determine what type of work you really want to do.
Good Luck

What a crappy day Jim. I'm sorry to hear about it. But stay positive. Your luck WILL change!
Between my husband and I, we've been laid off FIVE times How's that for bad luck?! But we came through it stronger and that much more appreciative of what we have. At one point neither of us was working for 6 months. I KNOW there's a light at the end of the tunnel and as far as the watch goes, I'm sure you'll get your Sub. Chin up friend |

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going. You'll do fine, you have many skills I'll bet. Oppurtunity always knocks for those who are prepared.
Good luck and hang in. Master Chief |
