Both these watches are similar in looks, sort of, and price. Just curious as to which one you would choose and why?

Love the Dial of the Explorer, also prefer the bracelet of the Explorer.

The silver dial of the datejust with the size of the explorer and the bracelet and that comes to a Silver dial DJ II........I am no use at all ha ha !

Depends on what else is in the collection and if you need a date, but, between those two, the Explorer no doubt. Great watch.

I have owned a couple 36mm DJs in the past; I currently own the 39mm EXP and I really love it...it is a perfect daily wearer with a ton of history and the size makes it perfect for both dress and sport applications. Go for the EXP!

They're two completely different watches, but they do have on thing in common. They are both Oysters and as such each is as durable and beautiful as the other.

I have an Explorer 114270 and a DJ 116200 63600 and I think of the former as Mr. Casual who dresses up well and the latter as Mr. Dressy (that sounds silly, I know) who dresses down well.

I'm not much of a fan of larger watches, but even as much as I love my 36mm Explorer, 39mm is a good size for the Explorer and benefited well from the recent updates.

However, I do think that the time is coming when 39mm will be considered too large for a serious dress watch.

Please, this is truly a conundrum for me. I have both, each one is a terrific watch, serving different but occasionally overlapping roles.

With the oyster bracelet on the DJ you're considering, the two are more similar than mine (a jubilee on my DJ), so you're choice is a bit more difficult. I must say, as much as I like my Explorer, it is so versatile and discreet, the DJ pictured above is hard to resist.

Aside from both being a Rolex, they are very different watches.

Prefer the sport/stainless steel models myself, which is why I went with the 39mm Explorer.

The Explorer is a more robust watch. If you don't need a date function, I would go with the Explorer. For me, the choice is easy.

36mm DJ for me, although I prefer the EXP bracelet.....but I've both EXPII's to scratch that itch. I found the hands on the EXP are a little hard to read in certain light, but then so are the 36mm on a concentric dial, but I love it anyway!!!!

in terms of size...measure the actual dial size of both...infact measure the crystal size of any of the 40mm sport watches v a 36mm DJ and you'll be surprised, they are pretty much the same.

Sportier, all brushed bracelet, better clasp, clean matte dial, history, looks, etc. etc. etc.

I would go with the 39mm Explorer. The original seems bit small for a sport watch.

For me I prefer the Datejust 116234 with a jubilee bracelet.

Why? Its a evergreen classic model.

Why not Explorer 214270? The hands is rather short. If you were too meticulous about details you will notice the minute hand does not touch the minute markers. The hour hand too does not touch the hour marker. The rest of the other Rolex are perfect.

So how about 114270? If your have the SEL and the robustness of the bracelet your would not go back to 114270. So now I am waiting for the next generation of Explorer in the future.

I will get the DJ first perhaps next on the new Explorer model.
