afraid to post on rolex discussion- a serious inquiry: omega vs rolex
rolex vs omega, which is better?
i think this question is unanswerable because its the wrong question.....i got my first rolex 30 yrs ago, but only started collecting and educating myself about watches and horology a few years ago. i think we're not making the right comparison....when i ask myself 'what are my rolex's to me, its different than the answer i get when i ask about my omegas... My first rolex is commemorative a landmark in accomplishment....but i won't go on about the virtues of rolex here....dont need to preach to the converted....however i think omegaphiles are a bit introverted through self preservation not this board....but obviously not me.... Asking whether rolex or omega is better is like asking are apples or pears better.... i have been in competitive swimming for 50 yrs (christ...) omega is the name on the pressure pad timing the worlds most important swimming events (what a noob phelps...best swimmer ever but spent too much time doing drills when other people were learning character lessons, pa leeez, bong man promoting omega)....ive never seen rolex on anything that required science or accuracy...tennis? equestrian sport?....no rolex set out to be status omega set out to be innovative...(love my mil gauss for the back story....2 gauss....what omega! 15000 gauss) .if you ask 'which is more innovative., rolex or omega?', which will be the best all around timepiece in the future?', 'which will attract new consumers the most?', 'which watch brings you the most of all value categories as one goes through all of life's activities?'.....quirky, iconic (ploprof, bullhead....er nothing rolex)i think its omega. If you ask the real question 'which has more status?', its rolex....but then rolex is the rolls royce of watches....rolls is rich grandpa's car.....rolex is rich grandpa's watch to the mass of the uneducated....omega on the other hand is a drivers' watch.(hang on dssd fans...are you really going 12 k down....not without your head caving in....at some point its stupid)....a better comparison is bmw/porche to mercedes......omega to rolex.....well if its performance your talking about, bmw/porsche if its comfy-leather-heavy milf attractor its a rolex/mercedes.... but must be taken in perspective, I'm 63 semi retired professional, drive a f350 and nissan 370zx and surf big waves and flyfish.....im a 30 yr old trapped in a old school body....each to our preferences... |

I don't know where you got your information about Rolex for your assessment, but you're so far off base it is ridiculous.

I disagree and find defects on virtually every point including the one about Rolex being the Rolls-Royce of watches, but thanks for taking the time to post.
As far as Omega being the timekeeper for the sports, what about F1? Besides none of that means anything except that Omega was the high bidder when the sponsorship was offered. As for timekeeping in science, I'd guess any serious science requiring accurate time keeping is not done with a mechanical wrist watch. Innovation? Check your history. Rolls-Royce? PP etc. come to mind. Value? Look at resale as a percentage of MSRP. I think that about covers it. BTW, I like the Omega brand.

I'm finding the more I concentrate on the design of the watch and what appeals to me and less on the name, the happier I am becoming.

Once you run out of weed, come back and re-write your post. But short answer is: Rolex.

The Omega SMP's are every bit the watch that a Sub is (plus you can get it in blue !!) Rolex is status, nothing more, nothing less, at the end of the day they both tell time be it on and on in the sea.
But heck, this is a Rolex forum, you didn't expect to get everyone saying Omega did you.. |

Totally agree. The secondary market on Omegas is poor. They are nice watches but... Rolex usually keeps it's value and in many cases increases. The Rolls Royce comparison would go to PP or AP |

i agree with the resale point on rolex....id hate to be in the business of flipping omega's...except maybe speedy's......but i wonder if the cost differential makes up the diminished resale? Maybe it levels out at about 5 yrs.....i just find that the omega's get more wrist time than the rolex's primarily because I'm a bit enamoured with them currently and the ones i have are > 40mm which i like.

Pears and Omegas. Like 'em both.
Apples and Rolex, like 'em too. Take no sides on R v. O since have both.

Objectively speaking, Rolex is the superior brand.
There is empirical evidence to this effect. The watches are similar in terms of quality, I reckon. It is likely by chance that I have experienced far more instances of my Omegas requiring factory attention than my Rolex watches. The Speedy Pro is every bit as iconic as any Rolex and I have three of them to show my liking for them. Other than that, what would you expect on a Rolex forum? |

I own a couple Omegas and I love my Speedmaster Pro, but Rolex is the better overall brand:)

I own both Omega and Rolex.
Non-WIS folks never notice or comment on my Omega - ever. The Rolex gets noticed by both WIS and non-WIS. I like both brands. It depends on what you are seeking as a watch owner. My next purchase will be a Rolex.....not even considering Omega additions at this time. To each his own......

Phelps is the greatest Olympian of my lifetime, and he's "bong man" because of one photo? Would LeBron James be "beer man" if we saw one photo of him holding a beer?
Anyway, Omega and Rolex both make some of my favorite watches. But you only need to set a Seamaster and Sub side-by-side and rotate both their bezels to tell which one is the higher quality timepiece. This isn't the first needlessly incendiary thread justified under the pretense of "well I'm just trying to start a discussion/It's more interesting than your Rolex and your lawnmower" and I'm sure it won't be the last. |

Every watch has its +/- so I just focus on what I like about them. Regardless of brand.

I'm not a huge fan of Omega at all.
But they do own Breguet, which I like better than Rolex.

You're talking a foreign language to me my friend. I can't agree and don't favor any omega, but respect the speedy pro. That said I've no plans to buy one.
