Is it safe (In Chicago)?
I will be spending a few days in Chicago next month and I was just curious to see if it would be advisable to wear my GMT during my trip? I will be staying near O'Hare and taking the Blue Line into the city. Public transit most of the time, open areas, etc.
I have never had an immerse experience in such a HUGE city. My only concern was for the safety of myself. I will be totally out of my comfort zone, being completely new to the city. I humbly ask the kind TFR members for forgiveness for continuing this topic! |

Blue Line?!? For God's sake, you'll be killed and eaten by CHUDs in the first 30 minutes, Rolex or no.

Better not to risk it. You should probably just hide your watch underneath your mattress at home. Alternately, you could get insurance and try to htfu.

If you have to ask that question and you don't have insurance, leave the watch at home.
It has nothing to do with being hard or that umpteen people say they've been to every ghetto and warzone in the world with no problems. What really matters is you're peace of mind. I'd say that the odds are in your favor, but having been the victim of violent crimes more than once, I can tell you that you can be victimized in less that a heartbeat and you willnot be pleased with yourself for wearing a valuable piece of jewelry when any nice watch will do. After you've gotten a trip under your belt, you'll be in a position to make the decision for yourself, without having to resort to asking a bunch of strangers what they think.

Chicago is safe, I would wear my Rolexes there without hesitation. But honestly, the best answer here is Grady's.

Whats the point in buying a Rolex and asking this question if you think its not safe to wear it when you leave your own town or county.

If you are worried you won't feel safe then just leave it would be my advice. Worrying about something isn't fun. |

Either HTFU and wear it or don't.
It baffles me how some people can afford a Rolex, yet lack enough common sense to make decisions like this (or can I wear my 300m Submariner in the shower?). If the OP has doubts, maybe he should sell the Rolex and wear a Fossil watch. I hear they sell those at the airport..... |

I think the better question here is have you wind tested the seals of your watch recently?

Chicago didn't get the moniker "The Windy City" because it's windy.

I grew up in the suburbs but have lived and worked in downtown for most of my adult life. Bad things can happen anywhere but I can't say I've ever felt "unsafe" here. I've been to what some might consider "bad parts of town" many times with a nice watch and suit on. Nobody around pays attention or cares. You will be fine where you are going. Enjoy the trip. |

I wear my Rolexes wherever I go, but I just try not to show them to much in some places, for example in metro i usually stand or sit with the dial not visible, either touching my side if standing, or the other arm on top of it if sitting, the best solution wear a shirt so it will not be visible and that's it, but if it worries you and you are there for a short time just leave it at home, no worries there...

these threads always amaze me....someone is successful enough, money-wise, to buy themselves an expensive watch, but, they can't make up their mind as to when, where and how to wear it.

Watch out for those Midwesterners. They may come off as friendly and hospitable but they're probably fattening you up for the kill for a family banquet. You can never be too careful.

Pretty sad a guy, who obviously doesn't have much travel experience, asks a legit question and then gets beat up for it.
