Visit at the AD today

I dropped in on one of our ADs today and talked with the manager of the shop for quite some time. This is the first time I've been in an AD for 20 years or more and he seemed to be eager to talk to someone about Rolexes. We talked for about an hour and I walked out of the shop not with a new watch but a copy of Vol. 1 and 2 of the Rolex Magazine, a PP brochure, and a few tidbits of info:

1. He said a SS version of the ceramic Pepsi GMT will be out in the fall. No other info, so take it FWIW, but it was like <wink, wink> "Trust me on this," as if inside information. This may be common knowledge by now, but if so it is news to me.

2. I was wearing my 116520 Daytona and asked about current SS Daytona availability. He said they are still in short supply and that their eight stores only get 8-10 per year total. In this market, at least, the SS Daytona is still in limited supply. He also mentioned that the SS Daytona was never kept in the display case, only being removed from the store safe when requested and available, and there is no waiting list. He said he could easily get any gold Daytona, however, which was no surprise.

I highly doubt Rolex would release a SS Pepsi Ceramic, as it would kill the sales of the current WG Pepsi Ceramic. Just like why Rolex never released a SS version of the WG Smurf Submariner. I may be wrong, but history tends to repeat itself.

He's just trying to make you feel special and get you as a client by giving you "privileged" information. At least out of respect to you he could have told you a semblance of possible truth and said it would be released at Basel next Spring, but saying the fall is actually insulting.

With all due respect number one makes absolutely no sense

I thought that one would liven things up a bit on this Independence Day and it did. It was getting a bit stuffy in here. As a clarification for #2, I stated that "there is no waiting list," not because nobody wants the watch but the AD doesn't keep one as a policy.

I have long learned to take everything said by ADs with a grain of salt. Sometimes it gets tiring hearing all these BS. But I don't blame them. They are there to sell watches.

When you walk into an AD with a Daytona on your wrist, you kinda are asking
for a huge pile of b.s.

If the AD was Adler's at the foot of Bourbon Street in New Orleans, you were ensconced in a simply wonderful atmosphere and good people. If so never mind the actual 'news' what counts is that you got to soak it all in for an hour.

Well, the facts are:
  1. Rolex never releases new models except in Basel. No new model this autumn.
  2. Rolex will newer release a SS pepsi after releasing one in WG.
  3. Many AD's know little of what they sell, and assume the customers know even less. That's why they throw out anything as a fact.

Your AD is probably so out of sync with what happened in Basel that he think the new pepsi was in SS. Probably just looked at the colour and assumed.

Last time I was at an AD I asked to look at a DD II. The lady came up with a Datejust II. I looked at it saying, "Nice, but this is a Datejuts. Can I see a DD please?". She replied: "Oh, of course" And returned with another Datejust II.

This is hopefully the explanation. Ignorance but not dishonest manipulation.

I also recently visited one of my locals and asked about the Pepsi. His response was that he had just returned from some continuing ed at Rolex and was guaranteed there would be no as version. Why? He claimed the company reps stated that due to the current complexities in making the bezel, that the replacement cost for it alone is 5-6k (? Wow), so it only makes economic sense to put it on with a precious metal. Sound reasoning I guess. I can only hope the next version gets rid of all the bling and finally grows to 42mm. Geez.....

Considering a SS GMT would sell for considerably less than the WG model it's highly unlikely that Rolex would release it so soon if ever. If sales of the WG GMT fall significantly then Rolex might produce a SS Ceramic GMT.

It's a good thing you only go to an AD once every 20 years! I don't want to even imagine all the other stories you would of been told if you went more often!
