Ferrari 308GT4

After Gerardo offered me all that lovely food & wine I was surfing to find desert . . .

Found this beautiful short movie on the Ferrari 308 GT4

It's not my favorite Ferrari but the more you look at it . . . you see that Marcello Gandini did at nice job when working for Bertone

I just checked what other designs he did and I have to say . . . impressive

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcello_Gandini

To get back to my first line . . . as much as Gerardo loves food & wine . . . I love cars . . .

No sorry . . . I love both ;)

Enjoy the movie

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wKwIfsAMZfs

Have a nice evening

Thanks for sharing, Interesting as well. I have been on the hunt for a Fiberglass 308 for sometime myself. Or a post '84 GTB. 76 or 77 308 GTB or a nice 89 GTB is my choice. :)

Father-in-Law has his for sale. It's a '78 I think.
I'm not interested. He does all the service himself - I would be flat-out changing the oil.

Still hunting for one ?

Fiberglass are going to be the most expensive during the years since only 712 where made before they started the metal production

I would go for the early years with carbs or the last ones with the QV engine

Just my .02

Ahhh, one of my favourites. And it's a 2+2, so a practical car as well!

I had to decide between a 308GT4 and a 911 ... I guess you know what I chose, but I still wonder about the one that got away, and what life would be like with it instead....

Thanks Marc, great find

I would also opt for this one instead of a 60's 911

Anyway the old 911 SWB what nobody wanted in those days are going from 300 k and up these days in nice condition . . .

Insane price if you ask me

Old Ferrari's are so beautiful, shame nowadays it's all about setting laptimes at the nurburgring, 5 way traction control and wind tunnels. The car's are not so pretty, but that's where the game is it.

The story I heard was that in the final season, Selleck's contract said that he would get the 308 as a bonus....

He took delivery of the car and then had it shipped to the mainland. On Christmas Day, he presented it to Larry Manetti, who wanted it even more than he did....

Awesome piece of Enzo's legacy....

They cost some money

A good year the price of a DJ

A slightly less year a Daytona

A bad year a YG Daytona

But I guess we all know that

Now if I have to choose between a Ferrari and a Prius . . .

Dad owned a 328 GTS for some time. It was wonderful, right until the moment the f150 took it out in a parking lot.

GREAT car.

I had a 308 GTS Black with a Red interior for a short while in 1980. It wasn't a QV and a 4 Weber Carbs version. Great looking car at the time. My observation on a 308GT is that it's a great looking car. The motor is fairly anemic by today's standards. If it is taken car of with regular Ferrari service it's pretty durable. It handles well and is fun to drive. In the short time I had it, I spent a fortune on brakes and valve service.

Still hunting. I am probably fighting a battle I can't win. GTB is a must. 76-77 fiberglass hard to locate and will be at a premium. In 1984 the cars were galvanized so if you read between the lines, Trying to locate one that will not turn into a rust bucket.

I am very patient however.

Got a call yesterday from a guy and he has 5 for sale but one is a GTS . . . so maybe . . . but I am not in a rush either

Good luck ;)

Great video! I've owned a number of older Ferrari's and I've always been a fan of the 308 GT4. I've owned an '89 328 GTB for the past twelve years, and it's a wonderful sports car.

Regarding 308's, particularly early glass cars, prices are skyrocketing with no sign of slowing down, especially in the UK. 246 Dino's were cheaper than 308's for twenty years, but today most any Dino is worth $200k, and very good cars could top $500k later this week at the big auctions. It appears that 308's are finally along for the ride, so if you've ever wanted one I think the day of finding a really good, desirable version for under $100k are numbered.

Regarding the video, does anyone know where it was filmed? I spent a couple of weeks in Sicily in May and I would swear that one of those roads is near Lago Arancio in Ulmo, near one of the La Planeta wineries. Those roads are great fun! Sadly I didn't have a Ferrari, but I think I got the most out of my Alfa Giulietta rent car!

Stephen,

I've turned down some borderline ridiculous offers for the car lately, but it's not for sale, nor will it likely ever be.

Regarding 308 vs. 328, 328's are a bit more refined, particularly the late 88/89 cars. Being a decade newer than the earliest 308's, they've likely suffered less neglect, abuse, or deferred maintenance. There are quite a few variants of 308's in particular, all with their own strengths, weaknesses, and quirks, but driving character remains similar across the board, and performance is similar as well, with the exception of the 2V injected 80-82 cars that were down quite a bit on power. My favorites are the early glass cars, pre-catalyst carbed GTB's (coupes), quattrovalvole GTB's, and my '89 GTB. The pool of average to good 328's is much larger than 308's, so you're more likely to find a good 328. Service costs are similar across the range, but many of the 308's had sodium-filled valves that can fail, but it's not all that common. This is probably the only 308/328 issue that I would consider potentially catastrophic in terms of cost, and in he past could turn a cheap one into a salvage case, costing nearly the value of the car to repair. Now that values have jumped, finding yourself upside down because of a valve failure is less of an issue, however that doesn't change the cost of the repair.

308 GT4's are a bit of a wild-card. They have the distinction of being the only Bertone-designed production Ferrari, not an insignificant factor for future collectibility. They can look a bit homely in certain colors (one of the few that doesn't look as good in red as many other colors), especially beside a 246 or 308, but I really like the way they drive, and they're a very interesting package of efficient design, considering mid-engine with rear seats. I wish I would have picked one up when a well-sorted car could be bought for $25k.

As for maintenance costs, I would budget $5k a year to own one of these cars. Most years you'll spend $2k for basic service, and every 4-5 you'll spend $10-15k for a full-blown major service. $5k a year covers that and then some, and you can take comfort in the fact that nice cars are appreciating, so actual cost of ownership is much lower than you'd think.
