Awesome... too funny.
My uncle was an air traffic controller for the NYC region - retired now. He was always super stressed out. I remember him taking my brother and I to work on Long Island. He would let us talk to the pilots. He would write down what to say. Talk about lack of 1980s regulations, letting a seven-year-old do this. "TWA L1011 heavy, turn right 45 degrees and maintain 13,000."

Ive had the privellage to meet some fedex pilots. Lots of funny stories and pictures of what they do on some long flights.
One of the pilots was showing me pic a that he had of a friend pilot who snapped a pic of himself and the stuartist doing well, you know. The genius pilot sent the picture to some friends ( not showing his face ) and apparently he was tracked down by the airline company he worked for and was fired on the spot. Sent this to a fighter pilot from WWII and he laughed.
Worked with Jack and he is one hell of a guy! I still keep in touch with him... November 24, 1944 We found cruisers under way and under attack. Saw 2 of our planes get hit and they headed for the beach. Made a good hit on the cruiser but on the pullout got hit in engine. Had very little altitude and power. Headed for Leyte Gulf (friendly area). Saw many PT boats and headed for them. Engine quit and made a very hard landing. Cart wheeled on port wing. Hurt my back but both Cal and I got into raft. Plane still floated. About 15 minutes later got picked up by PT boat. Both Cal and I were hurt so they placed us in the wheel house ? The cruiser was hit bad but still fired at planes and PTs. The skipper of our PT made a run and let go 4 fish. Turned sharply and zig zagged from shell splashes. Got back to Leyte and was put on hospital ship on way to Pearl Harbor. They put a cast on me because of my back injury. Cal had 27 stitches in forehead where he hit gun sight. Reached Pearl Harbor on the 30th of November. There are always humorous exchanges between pilots and controllers. I've heard them on a daily basis as long as I've been in aviation.
Although the stuff you hear on guard frequency or when there is a stuck mic is always my favorite. A few years ago, I went off on a coworker for being cheap. It was a nice profanity laced tirade. All the while with a stuck mic. I can't post a link because of the computer I'm on at the moment, but look for "A bad day at JFK" on youtube. That one always cracks me up. |
