Icon17 New Rolex Cellini

Hi all

I tried this on and was very impressed, it is quite heavy and has a thick case so has real wrist presence. The dial is spectacular, this is my favourite version of the new Cellini range. I believe it is priced at £11,900 so don't think it can be compared to Patek Phillipe which is nearly twice this much.

Probably best comparable to JLC but I do recommend checking this model out in person for someone looking for something a bit different.

It will be interesting to see how these hold in value as Cellinis traditionally have had poor resale. I don't think this will be the case with the newer models.

Be interested to know the thoughts of others that have tried on the new range and where they sit in the watch space.

Those date numbers must be tiny. Are they even readable?

I thought they were fine, I've seen smaller.

I was at the Polacheck's Jewelers Saturday and they had a display of them. They are nice looking watches.

I'm surprised the new Cellini line is not getting more mass appeal. I think they are brilliantly made, stellar design and aesthetically, just luxurious.

I don't think real 'dress watches' are one of Rolex strengths.
With the Cellini they are doing a good job, but in my opinion brands like JLC or IWC still make better looking dress watches.

I don't compare. I look at the watch as an individual stand-alone piece, and if I like it... and I like it for its function, then why should I have to compare it to another brand, or another style of watch along the same "genre" if you will.

These new Cellini are superb looking and are perfectly fine "dress watches."

I do compare. And I don't agree on that the Cellini are 'superb looking'. I think it is good looking watch, but nothing special in my opinion.

So, you don't "agree" that the watches are 'superb looking.' Then you say...

Well, you compare? Good for you... I don't. I look at each time piece for their own beauty. I don't compare. So there yah go.

I gave my opinion about the watch and you respond like your opinion is the only way to go.

If you like it, buy it.

I recently saw a pre-owned piece that was platinum and had the same ice blue dial as the platinum DDII and Daytona. It was stunning! Still a lot of $$ for a Cellini. Too small for my taste also.

Dress watches are definitely not Rolex's strong suit. I'd get a Grand Seiko at that price range.

If you like Seiko... I don't. So, that wouldn't work for me.

I tried this one on last week. I thought it had great weight to it, the date was easily readable (because that would be one big cyclops!!) and the strap was very nice.

Isn't this the bubble back one? I tried on a lot at the AD that day.

It is down to that, the Nomos Lambda and a JLC Reverso for me.

I have been in to the dealer to view the Cellini.

I expected more, it is difficult to explain. They are nice time pieces, nice! But between £12,000 and £13,000, it just does not push my buttons.

Nice is not £13,000. Sorry, my opinion.

The new Cellini line is fantastic. Even more stunning in person. Rolex struggled in the past with this type of watch, but I think they will do well with this line. A very elegant and timeless design. Personally, I love the Cellini Time in Everose Gold with white dial and brown leather strap. Beautiful.

I think they will continue to be Rolex worst sellers and as for holding value 50% off retail day you walk out of AD with it if you decided you wanted to sell. Just my opinion and my guess is it will prove right.

If this turns out to be the case then this will be a bargain second hand. When I was at the AD someone had part exchanged their 1 month old Cellini for one of these newer models. Their one month old one was white gold and around 33mm diameter and the AD is selling for £2,800! I thought that was quite reasonable given it's practically new.

So you think this line of Cellini's will lose value and have a 50% mark down in the 2ndary market? If so... then screw it....

I'll get a couple then. Because I wouldn't mind that in a selfish way, monetarily, to land a few of those bad-boys.

The new 2014 models is a fantastic effort by Rolex to revamp this line. Just like what they did for the Tudor brand. The latest Tudor line of watches are simply fantastic! The product will speak for itself, if it is attractive enough, people will buy. And I believe AD's and Rolex will pull a few tactics to market it. At the very least, I think the Cellini looks better in black tie / suit than the Oyster models.

To my eyes, the new line is a group of individually beautiful watches.
Comparing them with other brands is not useful as there is no direct comparability in most cases - apples with oranges.
In any case one buys what appeals to ones individual taste and we are all different.
A 'Dress' line will never sell in comparable volumes to a more versatile model - e.g. DJ - and will always be more of a niche seller. Buyers need to understand that when they buy as it will affect resale. It's not a comment on the watch/model, it's a comment on the niche market in which they sell.
I can't wait to pick one up at a big discount down the track.
