I am looking at this sub for sale and would like to know if the dial matches the serial (2.3xxxxx)and any other things I should know. I have not bought a red sub before so I want to be sure what I am buying first.

This is a MK 4 and from recent posts when I asked, 2.3 M is too early. Should be 2.45 M on.

Yes I have read it and seen it is a mark iv
but I have seen several other mark iv's in that range.
So thats why I ask
Is there any more research that would up date the older thread?

PS what about the service bezel do you think it takes to much away from
value?

What is the next digit on the serial, 2.3?,,, Anything is possible..

Also, what is the date stamp on the caseback?

You can research the VRF Dial archive but anything in the 2.3 range is meters first. If you do a google search, there are documented watches in the 2.41 and 2.42 range with MK-4 dials.. Were they changed?! who knows.. if you like the watch and the price is right - go for it!

One point of correction: The VRF archive does list a mark iv dial at 2,35 which supposedly was attested to by James Dowling who is an author of serveral books on Rolex (for whatever it's worth).

One point of Correction - I think you mean the "Vintage Rolex Case Number Project" not the Vintage Dial Archive..

My red sub is a mark iv dial with a 2,36 serial number case.

Some are of the mind that the serial number is a bit too early for mark iv, but i know of many examples in this range, and usage of parts from the rolex parts bin was too imprecise to establish a certain line At worst, it is a service dial. My red sub is really gorgeous and the dial is pristine with great matching patina, similar to yours.

If you like the watch, i'd say go for it.

I had a MKIV dial in the past, complete set also 2.3XX. there are feet first samples in this serial number range as far as I know. also, if a dealer sold you a 2.3XX meant for a meters first, wouldn't he change the dial and add extra $$ to the profit?

Now I am not sure what that price is, do to the serial- dial thing.

have seen a 2.41 MK4 so to start with 2.45 might not be entirely correct? am not sure though
