As much as I like the Explorer, I'm gonna have to go with Daytona on this one.

Well, do you like the Daytona more than an Explorer? Actually, that's not the right question, the Daytona is a much more interesting watch, more complications, available in precious metals, beautiful dial choices and one of the top Rolex models as respects brand visibility. I guess it comes down to which watch you want, which fits the bill for your needs.

I guess it depends if your prefer a smaller simple case vs 40mm case with a complication

I thought in your thread from yesterday you were going to go with the Panerai?

Also, didn't you say you flipped two Daytonas already?

If just comparing these two, the Daytona...and it isn't even close.

I think you can't compare those two watches very good and you can buy two Explorer's for one Daytona.

Hands down Explorer 1 or any Panerai. Forget about Daytona.

I realize that the Daytona is more expensive and "more sought after"...but if someone gave me the option between the two, I'd get the Explorer no question ( or I'd get the Daytona and sell it to get an Explorer and save the cash to buy something else).

Why? I just don't like most modern chronos because they all look pretty much the same to me. Including the Daytona. The more clutter on the dial, more colors, the more prominent the chrono sub dials are...you start looking like any young guy on the street with a Breitling, Tag, Seiko, Timex, Bulova, Hublot, AP chrono. With the exception of the Speedy ( with the dome, super legibility, and less prominent sub-dials), the Daytona looks like any other chrono from any brand IMO. I'm not talking quality, I'm talking aesthetics.

It's either you like one of the Rolex icons or you don't. If Daytona looks like any other chrono for you, well it's great.

Also, who cares about 4130 movement, that is actually of of the top chrono movements out there, right?

Maybe I should get a Speedy

Yup you're right. I don't like the Rolex Daytona " icon" precisely for the reason I mentioned. Did I say anything about the 4130 movement? If I don't like the looks, then I ain't buying, regardless of the name/icon status.

No one is mistaking a Daytona for any of these chronos you mention and I've had more than half of them.

Well then...my eyes are different than yours. As I implied before, for me, the more clutter, the more prominent the sub-dials on chronos, the more colors; modern chronos, including the Daytona, from any brand really start to blend into the crowd.

OK...I'm going to get back to the OP's question (and I agree with Neil, by the way).

The two are just so polar opposites, it would just depend on what you are looking for and what look you are going for. If it's pure simplicity (and quite a bit less out of pocket), then the EXP. If you are looking for a chrono with amazing good looks, then the EXP.

Given the choice between the two, it would be the daytona.

Price and exclusivity aside, the explorer by far.

I can appreciate the history and the iconic status of the Daytona, but the current version looks like a mess to me. There are many nicer looking chronographs for much less. As far as I'm concerned, the Speedmaster Professional is THE iconic chronograph and the current version is much closer to the original than the Daytona is to its predecessors.

I think the Explorer is a much nicer looking watch.

Five lines of text on the dial of a watch is poor design and completely unnecessary.

Agreed. Even though I'm generally a one watch kind of guy, I'd probably rather spend new Daytona money on both an Explorer and Speedy Pro Moonwatch.

Between the two, the Daytona. The Explorer 1 is one of my favorites and I wear mine often!

For less money than a Daytona you could get the Explorer and a Speedmaster. That's what I would do in this situation.

It's difficult to say.
Personally, I like them both, but it's all due personal preferences.
Regardless of (big) price difference, if you like more clean and legible dial and more tool-watch presence, with no bling factor at all - Explorer is the right choice.
If you're into the chronographs and like shinier surfaces on your watch, thus more elegant presence - go for Daytona.
Both watches are stunners and built like tanks, with the same attention to details, so answer is simple - go for the one that you like more.

I currently have both , the Explore 1 is lighter but wears bigger. Tough call which to recommend. If I had to get just one , probably the Explorer 1.
