Trading 4 for 1?
Hello friends! I've been contemplating this prospective trade for several months now and it's coming down to the wire -- I need to do it or get off the pot!
Here's the dilemma, I've got a small but modest collection consisting of: 116520 Daytona (White) 216570 Explorer II (Black) 16570 Explorer II (White) My daily, 1st Rolex, and my son's heirloom, the 16610 Sub, is staying with me. I am looking to trade the top 3 listed for my drooling grail, a slightly used, 116719BLRO GMT. I'll be adding another $7700 or so on top of the 3 beauties mentioned above (which is basically 4 nice watches.) I have read about 2 for 1 deals and a couple of 3 for 1 deals, but 4 for 1? I know this is totally subjective, but would you trade what is nearly 4 excellent Rolex pieces for 1 PM GMT? I do enjoy having a GMT when traveling, and I use my sub bezel for timing things several times daily (parking, laundry, etc..) The Explorer II falls short in this regard. The 16570 white dial is stunning, but I often miss having the ability to time items on the fly. Additionally, the Chronograph of the Daytona is a bit cumbersome to me with regards to unscrewing the pushers each time I need to time an action. The 116570 is too large for me at 42mm. It will not be missed. It seems like I made up my mind, right? I guess I need to hear it from this wise and WIS community. Should I stay or I should I go? ♫♫♪♪♫♫♪ |

IMHO, it's way way way too much to give up for the return, but, you gotta do what you gotta do.

I'd keep the Daytona and trade the sub. I'm just biased though coz I love the Daytona.

How old is the GMT and what are they asking for it?

Less is more. If you like wg gmt, then go for it. I will try to keep Daytona.

I agree, the SS Daytona is stunning. I truly love to look at it, and if I do part with it, I will certainly add it the collection again some day. |

I would just use the 7k to buy a nice 16710 pepsi in mint condition. It's a better looking watch than the BLRO anyway, IMO.

You sound sold on it. I say yes!
Since you'd still have the 16610, that would do it for me. |

As I grow older, I find the idea of reducing my collection very appealing since maintenance costs would be prohibitive in my old age.
So something like the exercise you are considering has crossed my mind many times... |

I agree with this, one could get a really nice 16710 pepsi for the 7k. If not I would save up a bit more and just get rid of the two Explorers. A Sub, Dayotona and BLRO would make a nice collection.

I've been flipping watches (virtually all high end brands/ steel and PM's) since the late 70's. Should you trade three steel and some cash for one PM? From my experience, it comes down to "who you are".
Meaning, if you can make this trade and your new grail continues to be your grail after a few years, it was a smart move. Regardless of whether you paid a couple grand too much or got a great deal. Time will even that out. And your love for the piece will soon trump what you paid. But, if you're like me, and every watch you get is a keeper forever going in, but after a few weeks, few months, or occasionally a few years it turns out it isn't, than it will be harder for you to come out. The more expensive the watch (like everything else in life), the fewer the buyers. So if your grail ceases to be your grail, it may be harder to sell and you may loose more when you go to sell it. So, do you know yourself well enough to decide if you're a flipper or a keeper? Just my two cents from my experience with this crazy passion. Last edited by Copasetic; 22 July 2015 at 12:44 PM.. Two explorers ain't gonna do anything much for you so they can go easily. As for the Daytona, if you fell out of love with it vs the 16610, then I guess you have your answer.
Many might make this trade for the WG sub, but not sure if they would do the same for the WG Pepsi considering that it's just the bezel that has the colours with a black dial. Might be a lot to give up for the bezel. But well, if it's the piece that makes you drool, then go for it! |

You've made some valid points. My reasoning for the WG Pepsi is that it seems to check off all the boxes for me. GMT, rotating bezel, PM, and the weight and feel that accompanies. I think I need to enjoy a GMT II for a while before I revisit this decision. Everyone has really helped me rationalize this decision, even if it wasn't what I was leaning towards |

When I was very big into photography it always bothered me I had multiple cameras and many, many lenses. The more 'equipment' I accumulated the less value I extracted from each piece. I ended up selling off everything but my Sony RX1 full-frame 35mm (can't even zoom) and diverted to proceeds to my watch hobby. I'm much happier for it and have extracted much, much more value out of that 1 camera than the $3K I spent on it. I think I would be happy with the watches you already have... and would also be happy with just a BLRO and Sub. If you consolidate to the BLRO than you have a bird-in-hand exquisite watch and you can always go back to accumulating back the 'lesser' pieces. But I think you will find once you have the BLRO you'll have much less interest in re-acquiring the SS pieces you let go. Ask Dr. Tom. |

Trading 3 watches is generally bad business for you. It's better to sell the watches one by one and go and negociate with cash in your pocket.

This hobby is anything but a logical decision. Go with your gut. If do the trade and have several times such that I don't have many steel watches anymore

Same here, once I tried PM, SS lost some of its allure. If you are keeping the Sub then I'd def go for the BLRO, best of both worlds.
