Need help with baby's first incoming!!!

My wife and I are having a baby due mid January which we are thrilled about. Being of the sentimental sorts, I have in mind to purchase a birth watch for my baby. I want the paperwork dated with their bday, and will go the trusted seller route if they can make it happen.

Since we are not finding out the sex of baby that will not be a factor. I also understand that potentially my kid won't be into watches and I would have to accept that, but I doubt it

Therefore I want to add a piece that fits in my current collection because I WILL WEAR this piece until some memorable event such as their college graduation or wedding where it will be presented as a gift.

Current collection:
AP 15400 RG (black dial on strap)
AP 15202
IWC Portofino Chrono (silver dial on strap)
Panerai 111

I do have my sights set on some other heavy hitters down the road, but I don't see passing those down until I'm closer to on my way out anyways so I've narrowed it down to a stainless Rolex. More or less choosing between the HULK or a BLNR with potential wavering towards a black sub date or no date. I think some color fits nicely in my collection and both the HULK and BLNR are going to be discontinued at some time so I think it is cool to have something from this era so to speak, but what say the good people of TRF?

I don't understand the sentimentality of the born on date warranty card. Also, in most threads where people ask the forum to choose between current models and past models, current tend to win. This is based on upgraded movements and design features such as the glidelock or parachrome. Lastly, and this is just me, but any watch I wear for 20+ years is going to be beat to hell. I'd just hold off and buy them at watch at the time if you think they would like it. Not that you were asking...

No, I appreciate all input. The dated warranty card isn't a deal breaker, but why not since I am planning ahead.

I get the idea of just buying them a new watch at the appointed time, but part of what makes it special to me is that it was dad's watch that he wore. My dad isn't into watches, but it would be very meaningful to me if he passed down something like that.

I like the idea. If it were me getting the watch which had been bought on my birth, I would be quite happy. I like sentiments like this. So I think go for it. Why not.

I vote for the Hulk.

I disagree with this. I think having the warranty dated on their BD is pretty cool. Yes I wouldget the one you like now, which for me is HANDS down the BLNR.

I think it means a LOT that a child grows up seeing you with a particular watch every day, and then someday, they end up with that timepiece. It's a piece of their father that they will always have (until they pass it along)

Well, I get what you're saying and I'm also biased so my vote is HULK. Congrats!

Congratulations to you and your wife!
Personally, I would go with the Hulk on this one. If your baby is female, I think it would be more appealing to a woman than the BLNR. Additionally you already have a blue and black dial in your collection. Why not add some green?

Ya, green is my favorite color too. My backup plan is since I plan on getting my wife a right hand ring for a push gift, the other day I suggested if it's a baby girl then we pass the ring, if boy the watch, or whichever they prefer when the time comes.

At the end of the day I realize these aren't the things that matter, but I'd like to commemorate the big day.

Congratulations!!!

I recommend a G-Shock... sure, nowhere near the quality of the pieces you're referencing, but I remember having my first child. So many dirty diapers... you're going to want a cheap beater for the first few years. ;)

How did you got word on BLNR or Hulk being discontinued at some time, or it this your speculation?

I will only pass a Patek to my child, but that's my personal POV.

I'm sure a Patek will be passed down at some point. It is just speculation based on what they seem to have done historically.

I faced the same decision in April, went with the BLNR! My wife liked the LVC, but since I'll be wearing it for the next 20+ years, I won the tie breaker lol. Congrats to you and your wife on the incoming!!

I agree with this, and if your child doesn't like it, you'll be wearing it much longer. If you have a daughter, just remember a lot of ladies love blue. My other half does and she'd wear a blnr in a heart beat over the LV.

Also, purely hypothetical, but if you have a grandson down the line, he'll prob like the blnr :)

Congrats and my vote is for Daytona. Classic size fits either sex and a beautiful and time-less piece.

Hmm, that's quite an original thought I had not considered to be honest. I like your reasoning and it is a great piece for either sex.

BLNR is the way to go here in my humble opinion. Nothing wrong with the LV but the BLNR is the best way to start a Rolex collection if you ask me.
