Apple Watch beats Rolex.......

My business partner who now wears an Apple Watch, and also thinks I'm mad for paying as much for a watch as I have (incidentally, he bought a brand new Audi S3 last year and it's worth £13000 less than he paid for it!!) He decided to try and explain to me that Apple watches are more of a luxury watch than Rolex because of some crazy survey. He then posted the link on FB.

I suppose each to their own but that includes me buying Rolex and him not commenting negatively too!

Here is my response:

i wonder who they asked to take part in the survey

i am sure asking facebook users whether they prefer modern technology or a mechanical watch will skew the results

Why are they stupid???
Because they value a watch that can tell time, play music, answer emails/texts, etc more than an overpriced piece of steel??

Apple fanboi's

They skew survey results.

Just tell your friend to check in 10 years from now the value of his Apple watch after it's no longer supported and can't take on the new firmware. Let's compare residual values then LOL.

Our Rolex will work and for the most part be maintainable while the Apple watch may not be.

+1...the apple watch despite its innovative concept is little more than a high-tech appliance & most appliances depreciate over time...when was the last time your Maytag increased in value or desirability?

for those old enough to remember...back around the early 70s, the Pulsar LED watch was once considered state-of-the-art. celebrities & fashion trendsetters were often seen wearing them...traditional high-end mechanical watches were supposedly doomed to oblivion.

guess what happened...the Pulsar ran its course & are virtually worthless today. meanwhile, the traditional Rolex continues to thrive.

with no intention of offending AW owners...the apple watch looks kind of 'lightweight' from the standpoint of ruggedness & durability. there is also something kind of 'sissy-looking' about it...just saying.

The big thing is, I've shown him the amazing workings of a mechanical watch and he's very impressed but sees paying thousands a waste of money but then he loses £13k in 1 year on a car???? I discussed about passing his Apple Watch to his son one day as a heirloom!!

Let's be honest...if 100 ex convicts were surveyed on their favourite pastime, your not going to get many saying their favourite pastime is a night out with the family, fine dining and drinking fine wine!

Good thing the article was from an unbiased source like cultofmac.com

I recently totaled my car and many of my peers(non-WIS) instantly pointed to my watch as a source of additional down payment funds. These are the individuals I credit with lowering my faith in humanity. Why would I "trade" a(for all intent and purpose) non-depreciating asset for a highly-depreciating asset and agree it was a positive move.

I, obviously, have opted for my Brompton, Uber, my selfless better half and the kindness of a few friends to get me around.

It wasn't even a survey. The rankings came from "measuring social media mentions and consumer sentiment from more than 700 million posts between 2014 and 2015". So I guess people on Facebook talk more about the Apple Watch than they do about Rolex? That means Apple has surpassed Rolex as a luxury brand?? Pretty misleading..........

A friend borrowed an Apple watch while his GMT was in for service. He hated it because you have to take it off every night and charge it! He also didn't think it was water proof.

While I have respect for the Apple Watch, this is rubbish.

It could be true, but in what category of ranking. Was it, total value of the brand, sales of the product, or gross population perception?

I would like to know where Porsche, Mercedes, BMW, LV, and Cartier ranked.

Ridiculous - Apple Watch is a POS watch that will be obsolete in 3 years, when the tech it uses it surpassed. Any mechanical watch has it beat, especially a Rolex.

"Global bra"?

So the Apple watch has passed Rolex on the list of global bra...

OK. Who cares.

Always consider the source. In this case it's: www.cultofmac.com

I have just about everything Apple has made. But I don't have a Apple Watch. Somethings can't be replaced with new tech.

I just don't find an Apple Watch useful. And I have iPhones, iPads etc.

Was just at a meeting and seems like half the people had them on. But us old mechanical watch fellas seem to stick together.

To be fair, Apple watch is a good product. I actually believe AW will be last much longer than most people have thought. I saw a Youtube video about gold AW, hosted by a professional watchmaker. He's impressed so far.
Quite interesting video
