I completely disagree with the people who say that Rolex doesn't make beautiful movements.
This one is not used in a watch, it's more for demonstration purposes so some screwheads are a bit messed up but I love practising on this thing before I start taking other people their Rolexes apart

I do agree Bas, and not only the movement but the case and clasp finishing and detail is often overlooked. I think the rotor if decorated up a bit would really help visually, but until they have a displayback they won't do much with it.

I have a Prince, which was dropped from the Rolex line-up a few months ago. A pity because the original Prince predates even the Oyster range. And the modern Prince offered a watch utterly unlike any other Rolex. It featured:
Rectangular body.
Unique movement..not used in any other watch.
Manual wind
Open back.
Heavily decorated movement which matched the design of the dial.

Nothing else remotely similar in the current Rolex line-up. Sadly, I suspect there never will be again.
Rolex forums barely mention this remarkable watch, possibly the most refined watch they made in the last ten years. No-one cared.

To me, the 3135 (and all Rolex movements) are beautiful in their pure utilitarian look. Nothing there without a purpose.

Yes, Rolex just makes a top notch product. I'm personally not keen on display backs if it's not a dresswatch but these movements are definitely worth looking at.

Probably not, you see most people like sportswatches, I don't think Patek sells many Calatrava's either as they're just not popular. People often think dresswatches won't look good with a shirt and jeans, but they do.

I think if they took the word "Cellini" off the dial it would sell better! The new pieces are gorgeous but you know what kind of reputation Cellini has, especially among serious watch collectors. Rolex shot themselves in the foot by trying to revive the Cellini name... IMHO

I'm not a fan of decorated movements, it doesn't do anything for me. I love the 3135 for being a complete workhorse that you know will work for years and years to come.

I find beauty in function.

When you take it apart and put it back together how many pieces (on average) do you have left over Bas?

Nice! I love all Rolex movements too!! Nice to look at them stopped and moving!! Nice to disassembly and to assembly again!! Amazing to fix it in the case and screw it up....

Easy to screw up indeed. I was used to chromed screws from ETA movements and they are very hard. Rolex uses polished steel screws and they are not nearly as hard, so I have ruined about 10 screws in 5 days. It's really important to keep the screwdrivers perfect and be very careful with the screws.

Yes, totally agree! I sharp them very often and by hand with the Arkansas stone! I take my time to keep them in perfect conditions and straight!
