I saw a Rolex Explorer 1 which appeals

I recently saw a plexiglass Explorer 1 which had been serviced, 2 year warranty, original dial and hands, Oyster bracelet 60's vintage overall very clean and, I would say, right, asking price £3,400.00. They would allow me £3000.00 for my early 2000 Explorer ll which is the identical offer made for my watch from a main Rolex dealer, I'm sort of tempted, having had 3 Explorer I and I keep been drawn back to the 36mm size. What do you think?

Hard to say anything without pics, but the price is low if it's an all original 1016. If it's a 5500, which I suspect it might be at that price, then I wouldn't bother if no papers. Too many re-dials around.

Thank you for your reply, I have just tried to access pictures but their website does not show pre owned, but, yes it is definitely a model 1016, I had one in the 80's, I have also owned a couple of new 5500 reference so I am aware of the differences in the model

If I don't decide to proceed with the purchase myself, and I am very tempted, I will let you have the URL

I sort of just wanted to run it past you people, and I also wanted to be happy about parting with my mint Explorer ll which still has a years guarantee to run, I also feel that Rolex have gone a bit vulgar with the new Explorer l and ll in fact the new Explorer ll 42mm is so ugly and wears so big on the wrist

That's less than I paid for my extremely-horrible-condition-inside-and-out-and-now-festooned-with-service-parts example, I say go for it! I'd keep the Exp 2 as well if possible though, the older ones are much nicer than the new cartoonish version IMO.

@kennethcooke

I hear what you're saying about the current Exp II...not a fan. However, I do like the ways in which Rolex upgraded/retooled the Exp I (114270 & 214270). I guess it just boils down to personal taste. At any rate, about that 1016, if you examined it closely (bracelet off to see the Ref# and SN stamps, interior movement & case back assessment, louped the dial/text & handset, etc.) and everything is up to snuff, I wouldn't hesitate on this purchase, even with your Exp 2 trade-in. I wish we could see some detailed pics, though...it's hard to make an unreserved recommendation without them!

I have decided that I don't wish to part with my Explorer ll and I certainly do not need another watch, I already own a Jaeger Lecoultre Reverso Duo so if you guys here want to consider purchasing the Explorer l which is for sale the retailer is

I've had no luck after calling Hull, Harrogate and Beverley. All they have is a 5500 from the 80s, and a 14270.
