Rolex during a Job Intervew

Hello
My GF is 25 years old and has a Rolex since she is 20.
In her old job she indeed got a comment "Oh, you wear a Rolex now"
Well I guess its a big jump from a Swatch to a Rolex.

Some time ago she had a interview for a new job.
She then putted her Swatch on for the first interview.
She thought they would maybe think "So young and already a Rolex"

The funny thing:
She did get a comment in the interview about the watch.
She is right handed and wears it right. And the two interviewers were too.
And they first told that its not usual for someone in her age to swill wear a watch.

Anyway: She got the job and now of course wears the Rolex.
The ironic thing that her boss, and the boss above both only wear a Swatch.
So the one lowest on the food chain has the cheapest watch.

So did you ever think about that?

Not in those exact terms. But yes.

At 42 and in my current stage of my professional career, I don't think about it anymore. But I do try and stay away from gold for those reasons.

Maybe at 52, I'll be ok with it all.

For now, truly, it's my omega seamaster that gives me the most comfort and piece of mind, all around.

It depends of what each person likes. Maybe they wear swatch but have maserattis and a mansion by the sea

I'm relatively new to the Rolex world but have had a "nice" watch (Omega Seamaster) since I was 21. As such I have worn it to every job interview I've ever had. Most of the time it hasn't been noticed. The one time it was, my interviewer (and subsequently my manager) was into watches so it started a conversation where I was able to show my personality rather than just regurgitate my CV. Subsequently, my manager changed roles and I got a new manager. Again, a shared love of watches allowed us to develop a relationship beyond simply work.

Ultimately, I do not see a problem with wearing nice watches to interviews so long as it's done with dignity. My watches are as much part of me as my wrist itself so donning a cheap one would be totally disingenuous and therefore quite inappropriate. Also, wearing them gives me confidence. In the case of my Seamaster, it was a gift from my parents so glancing at it just before I went in was a very visual reminder of their constant faith in me. Not going to lie, the little voice in the back of my head that says, "Bond. James Bond" every time I see it gives me a wee jolt of confidence too... shallow perhaps but it works

I have worn my Rolex watches to all of my interviews, and have never had a negative comment or any comment in regards to my watch.

I have also always been offered the job I was interviewing for....

That's how I read it too. There was another mistake like that too that threw me off but I understood where he was going with this.

Most people don't care about your watch. The few that do will either like it or despise it, but both camps will be small in number.

i once bought a cheap rolls royce ,,, under ten k ,,, in the following six months a fair bit of my business declined ,,,, a few snide comments ,,,

sold the roller , and bought a volvo at twice the price , and things slowly returned to normal , peoples perceptions are strange , envy is a powerful emotion.
irony , i only bought the roller as a giggle , well the last laugh was on me i guess.

My dad was a broke christian preacher who drove a 74 corvette he bought for $2,000 and then rebuilt over 10 years. He got constant negative comments about it, as if he was corrupt and a thief for being about to own a classic car. Now he owns a Honda he paid $30,000 for and no one bats an eye.

People are indeed strange and unfair in their perceptions. This is why every WIS needs at least one 'under the radar' nice watch. Good thing is Rolex has quite a few of those.

Agreed. I wore my 114060 on my first interview after college. Got the job.

They didn't ask about her watch choice. They commented that a young person would wear any watch, implying a reflection on millennial preferences for technology, like smart phones.

That may be true but I really believe more people can recognize a Rolex than we give credit for. That's one reason why it's become the ubiquitous status symbol among timepieces. So many people recognize it and can spot one on the wrist of another. One of the byproducts of not changing designs very often or drastically. DJ, Sub, DD, or anything with a cyclops, you name it. They are all pretty easily identifiable without having to read the name on the dial.

it wasn't always that way...the advent of the mid-1980s yuppie movement ruined it for most esoteric types. the same goes for auto enthusiasts who used to drive & personally work on their own, now classic BMWs (2002tii & 3.0CS).

the upwardly-mobile have turned many 'iconic' brands into 'a-hole' & oftentimes, arrogant symbolism...just saying.

I agree with this and just because people don't comment doesn't mean they don't notice.

Of course, the public's perception of what a Rolex is is often distorted, so they may not recognize every model, but get close enough and some people will look.

That's why several people called my Explorer a counterfeit and they weren't a bunch of yahoos.

Humans size one another up all the time for all kinds of reasons.

Honestly, it's a cliche to say it, but I could care less what others think. I currently wear a stainless steel sub, and have gotten a few glances, but not one person (disappointingly) has asked me about it (cause I want to talk about watches, not cause I wanna show off).

My short term goal is to move to a two tone Rolex, and my medium/long term goal is to own a fully gold model. Which models are TBD, but I buy watches of such caliber not only because I appreciate the history and the quality, but to prove to myself that someone who came from so little, can own something of such great prestige.

I never buy on credit, always in cash, and never go beyond my means. Honestly, my only Rolex, and basically the only watch I wear is my SS Sub. I will likely stay a one watch man.

All that being stated, someone "above" me can think what they want. Hell, they could likely buy the same or a better watch if they play their cards right. There's no reason to be shy of being a lower ranked individual with a more expensive house, watch, etc. etc.

It entirely depends on the job. I have always had jobs and only considered jobs that were performance based. I have also hired people for similar work. I prefer employees in those positions (like sales) to have expensive habits/hobbies. It keeps them hungry.

When we trained staff in psychological selling techniques we asked them to be uber observant. Shoes, ties, pens, sunglasses, pictures on desk, pictures on walls...you get the idea. So well-trained profilers doing interviews would just be normal to me.
A Rolex may mean little to average interviewers - and the fact she wore it was maybe meaningless - but her reply to the interviewers stated observation was definitely noted methinks.
