Another First Rolex questions? Opinions

Hello everyone...

Just joined to learn and listen to what everyone has to say. I have always loved watches and have been currently looking at some older djs. I have a couple of questions for you old school members and hopefully some good advice. The first question for you guys is. Do you think buying an older dj would be considered an investment by any means? I trade some stocks and have about 1500-2k range to spend. I really do not need to spend the money but i dont have any children or debt or massive bills. I have my own place and live comfortable. My main passion is sports cars but I have the urge to get that Rolex off my bucket list. Something i can keep forever. The next question is about upkeep and maintenance. All opinions will be considered and i can take constructive criticism. If my budget is to low than I will consider not buying the watch if i can not afford it. Suggestions on where i can purchase and buy from a trusted seller? Thanks guys

Absolutely agree - if you're looking for a Rolex that will hold value you'll have to increase your budget to between 5-7k and get a good used Sub....it's a classic watch that will hold it's value at a minimum.

It's an investment, in the sense that you pay money for it and it changes in price over time. Will it go up? Probably not. $2,000 doesn't buy much in the Rolex world these days.

As said previously, watches are poor investments. Take that 2k and put it in a mutual fund. Unfortunately 2k won't get you much in the way of a Rolex.

I don't want to totally shoot you down, but if any of this is in question then you might not be 100% ready to make the sort of financial commitment a Rolex is.

Same situation here. Im a small business owner. Not married, no debts, have my own place to live. Had some savings so pampered myself with 3 rolex watches. A 16610 SS Sub worth $7000, a 16613 Bluesy $8000 and a old 16613 TT Datejust $3000. Imo i dont consider it an investment because technically we dont make any profit, perhaps a better term for it is "insurence". I can have $18 000 in the bank or i can have it in a watch. Either way its still money. But at least buying a watch, i could actually enjoy my hard earned money by having it on my wrist and having to look at it everyday. In future if i needed the money i can always sell it at the same value i got it for to a end buyer . For $2000 u might get a decent datejust. But the problem is, ull have a hard time selling it for a good price in future. Unless u dont plan to sell it, the two tone date just is a great everyday watch and its easily recoginizable as a rolex.

Where can you find a "decent datejust" for $2k? Lowest I've seen were $3k-ish.

Older 16013 model sells for between 2000-2800 here in my country.

Mine was $2750. There out there but anything sub 3k is gonna be fairly worn and definitely in need of a service. I bought a stainless datejust with a linen dial for 2200 if I remember correctly. I serviced it and it's going strong today

I would never buy any watches as investment, unless is a rare vintage timepiece that would cost ten times 2K.

You may be able to find one in that range but it's likely to be 70's model, I believe?

a rolex is not an investment. what it is, is NOT throwing money out the window.

that 4k explorer 2 i bought in 1997 can be sold today, complete set for what i paid for it. close to 20 years enjoyment and no cost of ownership is a nice thing to have.

so, the money i spent stayed solid - but nobody made money. in fact, had i put that 4k in google stock i'd be in a situation to where i can buy a YG sub or DD after taxes with that same 4k investment.

so think and choose wisely.

Thanks for all the replies. Yea ive been doing my homework a lot lately and cant really find many date justs that i want under 3k. I drive a supra and lexus. I have money in stocks that is just sitting during the summer and had the idea . Ive always wanted one. I dont consider it a huge investment but definitely something ill have the rest of my life. The biggest issue is finding a good dj with papers and a box now. Ill find one soon enough but i appreciate all the comments!

For the depreciation you take on your cars every year you can probably buy a very nice watch.
Any watch is with you every second of your life (when you wear it), the good and the bad times. It will get scarred like you, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder:)

For a first Rolex I would buy a new one to signify the moment / achievement. Buy the watch you want, not the watch your budget allows.

I'm not 100% a DJII is the best choice, people may say it is a sports watch that can be dressy. If you say you're into sports cars, especially with that white Supra, something tells me if you stretch your budget a little bit, then a polar explorer 2 may be a better bet or a pre-ceramic no date sub which is a classic (that some say has the best chance to go up in value)
