Beginner question...
I have seen in a couple posts of people saying either that some of the SS models are harder to come by (GMT II BLNR, Daytona, etc.) and that they also hold their value better than ss\gold.
Is that true or did I misread them? |

You might be mistaking "more popular" for "better".
It isn't that one is better than than the other...they are watches and they tell time...some are more popular than others, which is just a result of popular opinion....form your own and buy what you like |

SS models are currently more popular than TT models (with perhaps one exception), partly because SS models cost less and partly because TT models are considered by some to be the choice of the older crowd. I'm a card-carrying member of the older crowd so I'm allowed to like both SS and TT. As you have discovered, you can usually get a bigger discount on a TT model than you can on an SS model. One exception may be the TT Submariner 116613 LB (blue dial and bezel), which seems to be popular across all ages. In the end, though, you should buy the watch YOU like.

It's the latest trend..
Back in the 70's and 80's hardly anybody wore a stainless watch, now days it's just the opposite..

I was one of those around in the seventies and eighties and yes gold was a popular choice for most watches because you could buy some cheap junk which looked good. However I can recall reading numerous articles on the Seadweller and Sub in gents magazines that said time and again that SS was the choice of quality. I do not have any knowledge of whether Rolex sold more SS or gold models back then, but the perception was that men with a sense of style bought SS. That did get turned on its head for a while when the big bang took place in the eighties and the red braces crowd took over the stock exchanges of the world and a Rolex TT DJ was considered essential along with the Porsche. This was the ultimate "if you got it, flaunt it" era. However in the nineties the trend moved to discretion and SS took over. There will always be some demand for gold because of the show off element but I think SS is going to rule the roost until watches start getting smaller again. A large YG watch looks loud whereas a smaller one does look classy. Also the problem is not so much the watch but more of the bracelet. Rolex bracelets are chunky and a gold chunky bracelet is pimp gear and will always be a minority taste. Regards Mick |

Not sure how you read as better.... They tend to cost more due to precious metals obviously but not everyone wants /likes gold or platinum.

Hold value as per resale? Depends on the buy in. Very few pay full price on a tt model.

Stainless steel don't depreciate as much as PM pieces. At least dollar wise you don't lose as much.

I'll be interesting to see what happens to the 520 Daytona resale value as the 500 becomes more available.

Basically the higher the cost of the watch, the fewer potential buyers there are, so discounting is more common and wait lists/high demand are rare.
Along those same lines, as a percent residual value, SS holds its value better than TT or gold/platinum although the latter watches are theoretically worth more. |

Probably nothing since that will be years from now and price increases will negate any depreciation. I would guess that any 520 bought right now for a discount, or any 500 bought right now at MSRP, will never be worth less than they are now. |

From what I have seen, used TT watches are sold much lower than SS ones but it does depend on which one. The blue TT sub is very popular, one could argue the most popular TT and will hold value the best. I picked up a TT daytona thats not too old in mint condition at less than a new ceramic SS daytona. So yeah TTs in general go down much lower than SS

From a Used Watch Dealer. Both are used watches. both are same year. And both are mint. TT Daytona was only USD250 more than the SS Daytona. When buying new from AD, I am sure the TT Daytona would be much more expensive than the TT Daytona. I think the same goes for SS Datejust vs TT Datejust
