SD 4000 for a two tone Gmtc
I just got a sea dweller 4000 and love it! My ad contacts me and tells me he just recently got a 116713 two tone Gmtc in and offered to trade for my sd 4000. The Gmtc is my favorite Rolex. Should I do it? He wants my sd with 1,000$ cash. Thank you in advance.

Something sounds fishy here. The GMT is priced $2000 above your sea-dweller and your trying to tell me your AD only wants $1000 more for the trade? I mean it is early in the morning here but that does not sound right.

My sd 4000 is a 2015 model with box and papers. His Gmtc is a Z model.

The 116713 was introduced in 2006 which coincides with the Z serial so the OP may be correct in his statement.

Good catch I thought they started the year after....if it is indeed ceramic then the trade is fine. Consider that the gmt is 10 years old tho and may be in need of service soon. Id factor that into the price

OP: a Z 116713 for a new 116600 would be a straight swap IMO. I've seen older 116713 sell in the $7500-$8000 range - about what your watch is probably worth.

I would keep the new 116600 because it wears more under the radar.
My GMTIIc TT gets the least wrist time.

They are both stunning watches and two of my favourite models, however in this I would not trade a under 2 year old watch for a 10 year old and pay for the privilege. I would simply save and get a pre owned one on older one that comes up on the forum.

What are the conditions of the two watches? I would have thought a straight swap unless your SDc is in rough shape or the GMT was very recently serviced by RSC.

You say the GMT-C is your favorite Rolex, so yes. Make the trade.

Thank you all for your responses. The ad tells me that the Gmtc is from 2011 with a Z serial. They are both in mint condition.

Being your favorite Rolex would go to see it at least. Your AD might have a client waiting for your SD? If so perhaps you can bargain a smaller premium in top of yours. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If dealing with a private trade, straight swap probably the way to go. Dealing with an AD who is looking to make a profit, the $1k may not be horrendous. Are they offering any time of in house warranty on the GMT?
Is the TT GMT-C your favorite, or just a GMT-C in general? Anything else in the collection? Would I do it? No...but my personal preference is the SD regardless of value. |

If both are in the same condition it's a straight up trade IMO

Nope. Not a brand new watch for a Z serial plus 1k. I'd think about it for an even trade, but even then probably not.
My advice: enjoy the new watch and later on down the road, when you start to get that "itch," add a GMT. |

I think you already answered your question. It's your favorite Rolex. Price doesn't sound out of line, and it's from your AD, someone you're familiar with and can return to. It really just depends on how much you've bonded with the SD.

In the real world it is a straight up trade. For a dealer to make money, the $1000 sounds correct! AD's aren't going to stay in business very long if they make straight up even deals.

In my world a pre-owned TT GMT is still worth more than a pre-owned SD4k. And I agree with what you said about ADs needing to make money, but this seems like a fair deal.

SD4000 seem to be averaging around $7500 pre owned, TT GMTC are at around $8500. It actually seems like a good deal especially from an AD.

1k is for the hassle free-ness of an AD. Your call. I'd probably rather spend the extra 1K hunting for an unworn or almost new 2016 model.
