I wouldn't call it rare.

Depends on the price. Steel and gold often sells for less than steel.

It's a nice dial. The dial is worth probably over 50% of the value of that watch complete.

It looks to be a 6084. If so the crown has been replaced with a 600 and to me that hurts the value on that watch at this point.

I'm not a big fan of the polish job on the watch. The bezel is rounded over and the lugs aren't sharp.

It's a nice watch. If you like it and it speaks to you and it is within reason price wise no worries.

That is a 1950's 6085 with a 14k smooth bezel.

It should have a "super oyster" crown.

Quick note about these crowns:

As with vintage rolex in general water and swimming is not really recommended. With the super oyster crown water is a terrible idea. These crowns were made for a short period of time by Rolex as they wanted to have a pull/push crown instead of the tried and true screw down. They regularly failed and were phased out and replaced in services by Rolex back to the traditional screw down.

The dial has applied gilt markers and the "officially" in red is a nice touch.

The size is a bit small at 34mm by today's standards but to each their own. I personally like the smaller sized pieces.

Oh and my name is Roger as well :)

thank you for the info, I'm going to buy a vintage Rolex for myself after working for 45 years. So the two tone is less valuable, thanks

No that's a 6084. 6085 is engine turned.

I think you could do much better with that amount of money.

After 45 years of working you deserve to get the perfect reward. Watch the classifieds here and see what things go for. One thing that is really good on this forum is that misrepresentation won't be put up with so you have a better chance of seeing what's what. I do wish the classifieds had a vintage section but you can look at all those new models also.

One last note, history will show that 1952 was the best vintage for watches and especially people.

4500 dollars is IMO way too much for this particular watch, unless perhaps it were solid gold, unpolished, and had an original Super Oyster crown.

$4500 is sky high for a piece like this, I would move on to the next one my friend.
